Hallam Union.

Your Executive

Hallam Union is run by students for students. There are five full-time elected officers, who are students who have just completed their studies or taken a sabbatical (a year off during their studies). Alongside the five full-time officers, we have six part-time officers. These part-time officers are students who perform their duties alongside their studies for several hours a week. Your elected officers are there to help and represent YOU so feel free to give them a call or drop by the office at the HUBS.

My involvement in Hallam Union over the past three years of study gave me the passion and desire to run for the role as President. I have been heavily involved in Hallam Volunteering, firstly as a volunteer on the Sporting Chance project before project leading Discovery Lab. I was also involved in other projects including Ready Steady Junior and Hallam Challenges. In my final year of study I was elected Hallam Volunteering Executive as a part-time position at the Union.

As President I am responsible for overseeing all Union activities while facilitating development of the Union. I am the main point of contact between your Union and the University meaning I am well placed to represent your views. As the figurehead of the organisation my role oversees the Executive Committee looking to ensure the future direction of the Union.

I first got involved in Hallam Union in my second year when I became secretary of the Drama Society and Chair of the Societies Standing Committee. These experiences encouraged me to run for the position of Media Executive in my final year. During this time I developed a passion for the Union and its’ vision. I decided to run for my current position of Finance and Services Executive as I want to make everyone’s University experience as amazing as mine.

As Finance and Services Executive my role is split into many areas. I am responsible for the financial area of the Union and for the efficient and profitable running of the commercial services. I have a large involvement in the Unions democracy, organising the elections, referendum and AGM. I am also responsible for the co-ordination of SHU-Media and represent the President in his absence. I do all this whilst ensuring the Hallam Union maintains a sound ethical and environmental stance.

As a fresher, I first got involved with the Students’ Union when I joined the Drama Society and went on to become the publicity and social secretary. This sparked my interest in the Union and throughout my time at University I played an active part, being a Student Rep as well as standing on the Societies Committee and Union Representative Council. This year, I’m proud to be able to work here full time, supporting and representing the Students’ Union and the students of Sheffield Hallam.

I’m responsible for all educational matters that affect students at Sheffield Hallam and can campaign on academic issues both within Sheffield Hallam University and nationally. I also help to co-ordinate the Student Rep system, ensuring that all students can have their say about their course. Above all this, I’m here to represent you, the student, so please don’t hesitate to give me a call or email or just pop in for a chat.

I became involved in the Union first through Hallam volunteering – teaching children in a young offenders institute to write music. In my second year of study I created and chaired the Student Respect Society. Last academic year I was the Education Officer, which is a part time role.

My current role as Equal Opportunities Executive covers a broad range of issues, including student welfare, liberation, representation (LGBT, Black students, women students and disabled students) and to combat prejudice, discrimination, racism and fascism and any of its manifestations within the University, or the wider community.

Whilst I was studying at Hallam I had an active role in Women’s Football, Korfball and the Rowing club, competing in BUCS (British University College Sport) and Non BUCS competitions across the country. I was elected onto the Sports Committee for two years and sat on URC (Union Representative Council) for two years. Interaction with Union activities generated my interest and passion for Hallam and more specifically the Sports Union. This is why I decided to run for the position of Sports Executive.

My role as Sports Executive consists of providing support to sports clubs on a daily basis, developing sports opportunities both recreationally and competitively. Every Wednesday 38 teams compete for Sheffield Hallam against other Uni’s within BUCS, I make sure the day goes smoothly and that all our teams compete under the best possible circumstances. I organise Winter Varsity (21st February 2009) and the Varsity competition between Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield University (March 2009), I also organise the Annual Sports Ball and Awards Dinner (8th May). As well as many other day to day jobs to support the smooth running of the Union and supporting the other Executive Officers.
