Hello, I’m Colan, this year’s Sports Officer at Sheffield Hallam. I was elected by students of the University for a second year running and I am honoured to have this opportunity to represent all of the students for another year.

My role as Sports Officer is to help and support the sport Hallam Union clubs and help them to develop. The Sports Union boasts over 35 sports clubs, from performance focused sports such as Football, Rugby and Cricket to recreational and outdoor activities like Snowsports and Climbing. In addition to club sport, you can also find out about a range of health and fitness opportunities or get involved in the extensive intra-mural programme through Sport Hallam.

Involvement in a sports club is one of the most rewarding and valuable experiences you can have at University. It provides the chance to meet new friends and to develop skills for your future career. So whether you’re looking to keep fit with friends or you want to represent your country we have an opportunity to suit you.

If you have any issues, questions or ideas then feel free to get in touch with me.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year – 9th Dec 2011

I’m guessing most of you will be getting ready to go back home for Christmas to spend time with your family and friends as 2011 comes to an end. I hope each and every one of you has enjoyed 2011 and are looking forward to a very exciting year in 2012.

I could go into detail on everything I’ve done over the last month or so to keep you all up to date on what I’ve been doing but I don’t want to bore you, so what I’ll do is just highlight a few things and give you all some key dates to put in your diaries:

- I sat on 6 Graduation Ceremonies at the City Hall where I saw over 2,300 students graduate, 3 Honorary Doctorates which included Howard Webb, 8 Inspirational Teaching Awards and clapped over 35,000 times!

- I have had numerous meetings with different facilities across Sheffield to finalise Varsity 2012 – exciting I know!

- I  watched over 25 Team Hallam BUCS fixtures with Men’s Basketball 1s, Men’s Rugby Union 1s and Men’s Squash 1s going into 2012 undefeated

-  I’ve been planning all the events for 2012 so make sure you get all these in your diaries and get involved in the New Year, it’s set to be a good one!

- I organised and played an 11-a-side football match, Hallam Union Staff Vs Sheff Uni Staff where we won 2-0 on their home soil. Maybe we should look into making that a Varsity 2012 point??

Dates for your diary

- Get Active Week, Monday 30th January – Sunday 5th February

-  Winter Varsity (Ice Hockey), Saturday 11th February

- Winter Varsity (Ski & Snowboard), Friday 17th February

- Varsity 2012, Wednesday 21st March – Wednesday 28th March

- Sports Ball 2012, Saturday 26th May

Dont forget if you’re on Twitter please use #HallamVarsity as we’re having a competition with Sheff Uni to see who can tweet the most about Varsity 2012. They have their own specific hash tag.

Finally, I hope you all stay safe and keep fit over the Christmas period and that you all come back safe and sound ready for an exciting year ahead. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas, a peaceful New Year, and look forward to working with you again during 2012.

Your Sports Officer,

Col

A painful but productive week!

My week started off in pain after doing a 100km charity bike ride for The Danny Porter Foundation on Sunday morning. I cycled for 4 hours 30 minutes with the BUCS Coordinator, James Perry, but we couldn’t do any more! We only managed to do 80km, but that was without any training beforehand and no experience – so i was pretty pleased with the result. From the day we raised over £7,000 for the charity!

On Monday my legs were sore, my backside was in pain and I was still tired but never the less we had a strategic work plan morning to try and finalise our themes for the Union’s strategic plan.

After that I sat on a panel with members of the University staff to select two students and one staff member to carry the Samsung Olympic Torch when it gets to Sheffield. There were lots of good nominations but there could only be three people chosen to carry the torch, and……… wait for it…….. MEET and HAVE LUNCH IN LONDON with…….. DAVID BECKHAM and ZARA PHILLIPS!!!

Wednesday was the first main week of BUCS fixtures for 34 of our teams and we got off to a good start. We had 34 fixtures, 19 wins, 14 losses and 1 draw. A few of the results that stood out for me were:

- Men’s Hockey, Hallam 3s 4-3 Sheff Uni 4s
- Rugby League, Hallam 40-10 Liverpool John Moores
- Netball, Hallam 1s 51-25 Durham 2s
- Men’s Tennis, Hallam 1s 10-2 Durham 2s
- Women’s Hockey, Hallam 1s 4-0 Leeds Uni 2s

I also had a University Sports Board  meeting on the Wednesday where we discussed the following:
- New branding for Sheffield Hallam
- Free Wednesday afternoons
- Scholarships
- Varsity 2012
- Olympic Legacy

On Thursday I went down to London for a BUCS Board Meeting and for a BUCS Strategy Workshop. Some of the main topics we discussed were:
- The test event at the Olympic stadium
- Vision and mission of BUCS for the next 3 to 4 years
- Main aims and objectives for the year

Next week is my birthday, that is all you need to know :)

If anyone would like to know more about the topics discussed then feel free to come speak to me.

Another busy week gone, but it’s certainly been fun!

Week commencing 3rd October 2011

I attended a couple of the Get Active sessions up at Collegiate with the BUCS Coordinator James Perry which were fantastic. We joined in with the badminton and table tennis sessions which were really well attended and so much fun – although James and I lost every game of badminton!

I also had a meeting with the managers of Ponds Forge to discuss the Annual Sports Ball 2012 which was very productive and exciting. We talked about what went well last year, what didn’t work, how we can improve the Sports Ball 2012, but most importantly we have got a date for it which will be released in the next few weeks….

On Wednesday I attended the Leeds Varsity and what a Varsity it was (still not better than the Sheffield Varsity though). Their Varsity is all in one day with about 90% of their fixtures on campus. It then finishes off at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium which was AMAZING! There were about 10,000 in attendance and the atmosphere was electric. The Rugby was of  a good standard and it was a great finale! It was a fantastic day out and I definitely took some things away from the Leeds Varsity – but  they also took a few ideas from the Sheffield Varsity.

Some highlights for next week are a two day Governors Strategy Event, and the BUCS season kicking off with Men’s Rugby Union and the BUCS Surf Champs down in Newquay at the weekend. Just another reminder….. if you missed the Sports Fair and haven’t signed up to a Sport Club yet and want to take part in competitive or recreational sports, then it isn’t too late! We have something for everyone to get involved in! Please check out the Sports section on our website to find out more www.hallamunion.org/sports. Welcome Blog

Welcome to Hallam Union, I’m Col and I’m your Sports Officer for this year. First of all, I would just like to congratulate those of you who have got a place to study at Sheffield Hallam University.

Colan’s original manifesto

1. WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS I BRING TO THE ROLE:

I’ve really enjoyed my year as Sports Officer so far and would love the opportunity to represent students again. I believe I stuck to my last manifesto and achieved my aims and objectives such as dividing my time, support and focus evenly across all sports clubs; devising a plan for each club and seeing what their aims and objectives for the year was and much more. However, I don’t think 12 months is long enough for this role because it takes a good 2-3 months to find your feet before you can get into the swing of things. If I was voted in again I would be able to plan events, campaigns and engage with the wider student population much sooner and more effectively. I’m dedicated, passionate and committed in everything I do, and in this role you need all of these. I’ve been a student and played student sport for 3 years at Hallam so I have the experience of being a sport student and the Sports Officer. I know things that work, and things that won’t because of the inside knowledge I have already and I believe I can do more for the students at Sheffield Hallam!

2. IN THIS ROLE I WILL ACHIEVE FOR STUDENTS

MY AIMS • Continue to enrich and support the students experience at Sheffield Hallam • Continue to take Team Hallam to the next level MY OBJECTIVES • Continue to implement and carry out the University Sports Strategy • Continue to understand, engage and effectively communicate with all students and stakeholders across Sheffield Hallam • Continue to make Winter Varsity, Varsity and the Sports Ball the biggest and best it can be • Continue to divide my time, support and focus evenly across all the sports clubs • Continue to devise plans for each club by seeing what their aims and objectives are for their year Plus • Give something back to the students that feel like they have had something taken away from them e.g. Team Hallam Tour • Make sure Hallam Union is MORE student focused and student led so the student voice is heard as I believe students are the most important part of a Students Union • Encourage International, Part-Time and Post-Graduate students to participate in sport. There’s a common misconception that all sports is played on a Wednesday afternoon; but there are many other opportunities in the wider community for EVERYONE to get involved in

3. STUDENTS SHOULD VOTE FOR ME BECAUSE:

The future’s bright, it’s maroon and white!
