WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS WILL I BRING TO THE ROLE?
Having now spent 5 months on the LGBT+ committee standing as Women’s Welfare Officer, I have helped organise several events and provided support for many members of the group. From this I have gained experience dealing with new situations and responding to them appropriately. I feel like I am now integrated into the group and am able to represent LGBT+ whilst also bringing new ideas to the table. The main events I have contributed to are the Trans* campaign, the Bisexual campaign and making the decision to begin to create a charter for all Hallam sports team to sign. This will be against homophobia in sports, as it is already in women’s rugby. I’m very confident and consider myself to be a very hard worker. I was elected to be Senior Prefect in year 13, which gave me the opportunity to improve my assertiveness and leadership skills.
IN THIS ROLE I WILL ACHIEVE FOR STUDENTS
I think LGBT+ is already very successful; we have a weekly social and a bi-weekly film night. I want to make LGBT+ a more inclusive group as opposed to an exclusive group. I also want to have a regular coffee social so more people can socialise who would otherwise not due to the environment we usually meet in, i.e. a pub or bar. I also want to ensure that we continue next year with the same pace that we are moving at now. LGBT+ isn’t, by definition, an inclusive group so I want more opportunities for students who support LGBT+ to join in too, I want LGBT+ to be open to anyone who wants to make new friends and meet new people who they possibly wouldn’t ever meet.
STUDENTS SHOULD VOTE FOR ME BECAUSE: A vote for me is a vote for equality!
