HallamUnion EducationOfficer
@HallamEducation
WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS WILL I BRING TO THE ROLE?
I am the current ACADEMIC REP in the Union. As part of my role I sit alongside much of the university management on several committees including the STUDENT VOICE COMMITTEE, the ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE and the ACADEMIC BOARD – the highest committee in the university that deals with academic issues. I also sit on EDUCATION COMMITTEE and work together with the current Education Officer. Basically, I have spent all year completely immersed in all issues to do with your education! I have twice represented the students of Sheffield Hallam on a national level at NUS ANNUAL CONFERENCE. I will attend Conference for the third time this April. I am a third year student, a former COURSE REP and an active member of student union societies and I believe I have the experience needed to lead my fellow students.
IN THIS ROLE I WILL ACHIEVE FOR STUDENTS:
From this September Hallam will be charging fees of £8500. While continually opposing the rise in fees we must support our future students by ensuring our university works to widen participation. Education should be open to everyone and fees shouldn’t be a barrier to this. Even before the fees increase, many students already face massive financial difficulties. I will campaign locally and nationally to ensure our students are getting the best from their time at university. This includes getting the support we deserve from lecturers and tutors. They have a responsibility to provide us with necessary support and they must be held to account if they aren’t keeping their side of the bargain. I will push for better feedback on assignments and exams that is detailed, personalised and prompt. Postgraduate and part-time students make up a large chunk of our student body. I will work to ensure they receive sufficient support and representation in the union and the university. Most importantly I want to engage with as many students as possible. Our Students Union should be the first place a student goes for support and advice. I want every student to know that their union is here to support them.
STUDENTS SHOULD VOTE FOR ME BECAUSE: I will put Hallam students first.
