1. WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS I BRING TO THE ROLE:
I have mobility difficulties using crutches for short distances and a wheelchair on and around campus, so i understand the difficulties faced by disabled students. I worked in industry for almost 5 years between my BSc hons degree and my MSc, and during this time experienced a variety of differing attitudes to my disability. I gained many skills by working with the St John ambulance as a sergeant and also with the millenium volunteers project. I also completed all three levels of my Duke of Edinburgh award and as part of the residential project section of the gold award spent some time in Romania helping out a camp school, monistary and old peoples residential home. I gained many skills such as working with people and also on my own initiative but also had to work under pressure too, all these skills i think will help in the role of disabled student rep.
2. IN THIS ROLE I WILL ACHIEVE FOR STUDENTS
In this role i hope to:- Increase awareness of the difficulties disabled students face in terms of both attitudes towards them from others and also in terms of accessibility of the campus’s. Enable disabled students to play team sports within university teams as opposed to being referred to external societies/groups. (This would allow participation in varsity games etc) Inform the university of any inaccessible areas whether it be lecture theatres or university buildings so that they may be able to change this for the better. Be a contact point for disabled students so that together we can highlight the areas that need to be changed in order to create a positive change for the future.
3. STUDENTS SHOULD VOTE FOR ME BECAUSE:
If You want positive change for disabled students Vote Kat!!
