Statement from your President

We are disappointed to hear about the actions of some of the students who attended the Annual Varsity final between University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University at Hillsborough yesterday.

This behaviour unfortunately is from a minority of students and is by no means a reflection on the majority of students studying in Sheffield. Students from both Universities were very proud to play at Hillsborough to showcase and celebrate their sporting skills to the residents of Sheffield. Both Unions promote strong community pride and work hard to maintain this.

Once our students leave our event it becomes difficult to control where they choose to spend their time. However, we shall endeavour to put measures in place to try to ensure that this is not repeated in future varsity competitions.  A thorough clean-up operation involving students from both Universities has been carried out this afternoon.

Jake Kitchiner
President
Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union

Come Clean – NUS Week of Action

On Wednesday students took to the streets of Sheffield to campaign for bursaries, for universities to come clean on hidden costs, post graduates to get better support and against the rise in tuition fees.

Hallam Union will continue to work closely with our University to tackle these issues and work towards a joint agreement which is in the interest of our students. This is all part of the national campaign in a week of action and we will continue to work and campaign on these issues locally as well as lobby local parliament in future.

Take a look at the footage from the walk out which took place in Sheffield on Wednesday 14th March below:

Officer Weekly Update – 28/11/11

This Week

The Housing Fair

This week it’s all about housing. Living away from home for the first time can be a daunting prospect…I know it was for me. So you’re first shared house is so important. This week we’ll be asking students about their experiences with rented accommodation and also about how and when they are making decisions about where they’re going to live next year.

The University Board of Governors Visit The HUBS

The University’s board of Governors is coming to the Union this week to have a look first hand at all the great things the Union does for students. The Housing fair is also happening on Tuesday, where over 20 landlords will be here ensuring you get the best house for your money. We’ve also got our first Assembly on Thursday 1st December at the HUBS!

Last Week

Graduations

Last week we had the honour of sitting on Graduations. It was fantastic to see so many students graduating and to witness their achievements. They were such grand ceremonies and it was amazing to be part of the platform party.

Shadow an Officer

We’ve also been busy planning ‘Shadow an Officer’ which is a campaign we run to provide students with the opportunity to see what it’s like being an officer. It also provides an insight into how the officer committee works and will encourage students to want to follow in our footsteps and make a change.

Get Active Week 2012

Your Sports Officer, Col was busy last week gathering very useful ideas from students about Get Active Week 2012, and how we can raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and make the week as exciting as possible!

Getting in the festive spirit!

Don’t forget it is getting close to Christmas, and on Thursday afternoon, the officers will be putting up decorations in the office so feel free to come along! It’s time for to get in the Christmas spirit!

Why not fill out a nomination form online (Hallamunion.org/democracy) and get involved in the Union as either a Society rep, Assembly rep, Student Trustee, BME (black, ethnic, minority) rep and NUS Annual Conference delegate! It’s a fantastic way to become more employable and have fun whilst doing it! Voting open from 4th – 10th November! So remember – Don’t lose it, USE IT!  Click here for more info.

Carl, Your Welfare and Community Officer:

Last week was the Official launch of Rumour, Hallam’s brand new LGBT night organised in associated with Hallam’s LGBT society. What a night! It was amazing, but don’t take our word for it… click here for the pics!

Col, Your Sports Officer:

I’ve been working with the University help put on more social sporting options for Hallam students. Me and Carl have had a go at Judo, and it seems 45 of you turned up for some boxing! We’ve got everything from badminton to gymnastics to skiing…and the best bit. It doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner…just turn up and play. Get the schedule here.

Scott, Your Education Officer:

Loads of you have said that there isn’t enough space in the learning centres so I have booked out P Pod upstairs in the HUBS for you to use as study space from now until the 13th December. The space is ideal for group work and of course you can access wifi through your usual login.

Helen F, Your Activities Officer:

RAG (Raise and Give) has officially started with students dedicating their time to raise money for the charities of Hallam Union!! The Swagger Raggers had a presence at Pounded on Monday raising £110.20 which is a third of what RAG raised overall last year!! CRAZY! To help raise awareness of it all a RAG like-a-thon is happening right now! For every person that likes SHU RAG on facebook I will donate 1p to the charities which will be decided at Union Council on Tuesday 1st November. If you would like to get involved whether it’s to raise money or give money let me know!! Get liking here…

Jake, Your Union President:

A national demonstration to protest about the university fees structure and other cuts has been announced for the 9th November. I, and my team have been out asking you if you think Hallam Union should support and attend this demo. If you haven’t had your say yet fill in this super short (literally yes/no) survey to tell us what you think.
