COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT VOLUNTEER – SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE

Description

The aim of this volunteer role is to enhance and compliment the role of Fire Service staff in meeting the needs of our local communities and help build closer links with them. We are looking for volunteers who can assist us to break down language barriers and help us to engage directly with the community. This role is an integral part of delivering the right service to the right people in the right places. We are looking to recruit a ‘pool’ of volunteers who can be called upon, as and when there is an organisational need to help and assist us with.

As a volunteer you will engage with those identified as vulnerable within your own community who may not have received a Home Safety Check.

Distribute and promote safety literature to those sectors of the community not yet accessed.

Identify and locate vulnerable people, and people who may be at high risk of having a fire, within your local community and refer to SYFR and relevant partner agencies.

Distribute safety materials within your community.

Share information with your existing networks and within your local communities

Promote safety events and initiatives.

Support staff at events by handing out information and engaging with visitors.

Commitment

This is a flexible role. Times to be discussed with the organisation.

TABLE TENNIS COACH – ACTIVITY SHEFFIELD & WITHIN REACH

Description

Activity Sheffield is the Sport, Play, Physical Activity, Culture, Dance and Environment service of Sheffield City Council. The service provides opportunities, in all the previously mentioned areas, across the City of Sheffield. From sports camps, to grass sledging, to elite clubs, we offer activities for all ages and abilities.

Activity Sheffield work closely with Within Reach to run the Disability Sheffield project, which encompasses all of the above with a focus on disability and inclusive participation.

As a volunteer you will help to deliver Table Tennis coaching to children aged 8-16 with a variety of disabilities and/or impairments

You will be working along-side an Activity Sheffield member of staff

Commitment

Every Wednesday for 6 weeks from 7th November – 12th December

5.00 pm – 6.00 pm. Hillsborough Leisure Centre

Essential Skills

A passion in one or more of the following: Sport, Play, Physical Activity and Culture,

Enthusiasm for working with children and young people

Minimum of Level 1 Table Tennis Coaching Qualification

Desired skills

Desire to support, help and encourage more people to be more active, more often

STUDENT MENTORS – LONGLEY PARK 6th FORM

Description

Within this role volunteers will be mentoring students and help at drop in sessions. Drop in sessions - Volunteers will be situated in a mentoring room which is designed for students who need a quiet space, to talk, calm down and get advice. Students may be sent from lessons if they arrive upset or they are struggling to focus in class – it is not a behaviour referral room. Volunteers in this room will be on hand to speak to students that come in, offer advice and hopefully enable them to return to class. Some students will access this room outside lesson time if they need to talk.

Mentors will also meet with students on a one to one basis for ½ hour sessions to discuss any issues. The intention is to work with students on issues effecting their progress and achievement in college such as attendance, organisation skills, managing work load. Students may also bring personal issues that they want to discuss. 

Commitment

Volunteers will be required for half a day or a full day and  commit to the same time each week.

Desirable Skills

Patience, very good interpersonal skills, good sense of humour, communication, ability to relate to young people from all sections of the community, the ability to listen and offer practical advice.

A CRB is required for this opportunity. This can be provided by the host organisation.

INTERACT

Project Description

Volunteers will plan and run monthly sessions for young people aged 11-15 with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. Each session will include a variety of games, role play and fun activities. This is a great opportunity to have lots of fun while making a real difference in the community.

Commitment

Compulsory Autism Awareness training will take place in the first semester.

The first semester will be spent planning the workshops and doing any necessary fundraising.

In the second semester, volunteers will deliver four monthly workshops on a Monday evening from 6-8pm between January and April.

Desirable Skills

You will enjoy working with young people, and be able to communicate well with them.

CRB Requirements

A CRB disclosure is required for this opportunity. This can be provided by Hallam Union for all home students.
