OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY – KIDS ACTIVITY VOLUNTEERS

Description

Prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch will spend 70 days touring the United Kingdom. The Torch will arrive in Sheffield for an evening celebration, on Monday, June 25th. 

During the afternoon of Monday 25th June, Hallam Union is organising activities for international students and a local primary school as part of the city wide Torch Relay celebrations. The activities will be an exciting build up to the evening celebrations taking place in the city centre.  The afternoon activities will include;

  • Mini Olympics
  • Arts and Craft workshops
  • Cultural carnival – culture sharing, costume making
  •  

We are looking for volunteers to help run the kids activity workshops on the day. This could be arts and craft or sports. Along with other volunteers you will plan the activities in a couple of meetings before the event and be responsible for leading the activities on the day. This is great experience for anyone interested in gaining experience working with children.

Commitment

x2 meetings prior to the event (dates tbc)

Monday 25th June, 12 – 5pm (approx)

CRB Requirements

A CRB is required for this role – this will be issued by Hallam Union.

Please note, we are looking for volunteers to help with the event coordination, running kids sports activities and assisting with some cultural workshops. If you are interested in volunteering in all these areas, please state this when you apply for the role.

COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT REP – VOLUNTEERING COMMITTEE – 2012/13

Description

To take part in committee discussions in order to provide feedback from volunteers involved Community Rep and cultural opportunities

Attend Community Rep Team meetings

From time to time to sit on sub-groups looking into various areas of work as decided by the Committee

Share feedback made by community groups in relation to volunteering and general community needs

Promote and explain the brokerage system to Community Reps so the Reps feel confident to respond to enquiries from community groups requesting volunteers.

Input into the development of new cultural opportunities that meet a community need through community research and regular meetings with the Community Development Co-ordinator.

Have the opportunity to develop and lead new events/volunteer activities related to culture and/or community. 

Be available to advise and support your allocated volunteers throughout the year.

Be a member of the Volunteering Student Committee.

Actively fundraise for volunteering

Any other duties appropriate to the role. 

Commitment

Attend fortnightly committee meetings.

Regular one to ones with volunteering staff / Activities Officer.

Attend additional volunteering events (fairs, showcases, socials)

Desirable Skills 

Committed to personal development and willing to attend various training sessions related to role.

Willingness to listen to others and respect their opinions.

Able to work on own initiative and represent student volunteers.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES OFFICER – VOLUNTEERING COMMITTEE – 2012/13

Description

Take a lead role alongside staff and the elected Officer in ensuring that Volunteering with Hallam Union adheres to Union and external policy and good practice in equal opportunities.

Assist in delivering training to volunteers in relation to inclusion and equal opportunities alongside Volunteering staff.

Source and disseminate useful tips, training and advice to projects and project leaders.

Look into the profile of student volunteering at Hallam Union and research ways to target recruitment and engage social groups not traditionally involved.

Run campaigns to promote Volunteering with Hallam Union to social groups not traditionally involved.

Look into retention issues and examine issues relating to why students disengage with Volunteering with Hallam Union.

Be a member of the Volunteering Standing Committee and provide regular progress reports to them.

Be involved in the planning and implementation of a ‘planning day’ at the end of the academic year to gather information from student volunteers.

Be involved in training related to the position.

Actively fundraise for volunteering

VOLUNTEERING EVENTS OFFICER – VOLUNTEERING COMMITTEE – 2012/13

Description

Advise and assist individual projects with technical and event planning support where requested. 

Attempt to attends ‘events based’ team project meetings to offer support

Lead and support a team of volunteers to provide technical (via liaison with tech department), set design, and event planning support for Volunteering projects.

Along with support team organise and coordinate one off volunteering opportunities

Encourage good communication and liaison between projects when planning events.

Build and maintain effective links with other projects, Committee teams and external organisations. 

Liaise with stage services and attend training when provided.

Be a member of the Volunteering Standing Committee and provide regular progress reports to them.

Actively fundraise for volunteering

FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS OFFICER – VOLUNTEERING COMMITTEE – 2012/13

Description

Advise and assist individual projects with fundraising where requested.

Lead and support a team of volunteers to oversee fundraising for all projects and teams.

Devise and implement events which will raise funds that will contribute towards the Volunteering Small Grants Fund.

Assist in delivering fundraising and events training to students alongside volunteer staff.

Organise and promote social events open to all volunteers at Hallam Union. As a minimum two events will need to be run, a Welcome party and an Awards Night

Build and maintain effective links with team projects, Committee teams and external organisations.

Be a member of the Volunteering Standing Committee and provide regular progress reports to them.

Actively encourage the committee and their support groups to fundraise for volunteering.

Any other duties appropriate to the role.
