From Art & Culture, Community, Individual, Latest Vacancies, Project
This is a brand new programme where volunteers will work together in the Museums galleries, to demonstrate and interpret objects from our collections to visitors. This is a system which is much enjoyed by volunteers at other museums, and very well received by their visitors. We will provide object handling and customer care training for volunteers as well as specific training sessions by curators and Museum Learning staff for each of the different activities that we run.
All our volunteers will receive a full health and safety site induction.
The role will include – (lots of training but none of it too daunting!) -
Object handling training
Visitor Service training
Specific training on the subject(s) you are showing
Reading notes about the objects
Collecting the materials and table, transporting to relevant gallery (help can be given with this if you have mobility problems)
Setting up the object table
Talking to visitors about the objects and letting them handle the objects
Putting the table and objects away
We would ask you to commit to a minimum of one half day per fortnight, but you can do as much as you like. It would be best if you could commit to the same slot each week. The session will be for three hours ( 10.00 am – 1.00 pm or 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm) plus time (approx. half an hour) to set up and put away the objects.
Ideally we would like you to commit to the project for a minimum of 6 months, as it can take some time to get through the training programme.
No experience necessary as full training will be given.
A love of social history/natural history/art
Enjoy communicating the above to our visitors in a relaxed informal way
Reliable and trustworthy
