GET ACTIVE WEEK VOLUNTEER

Description

28th January until the 2nd February marks the return of Get Active Week. Not familiar with Get Active Week?

Get Active Week will be a week of physical activity opportunities and awareness raising events designed to encourage students at Sheffield Hallam University to become more active in order to improve their quality of life. Get Active week is a Hallam Union campaign run in conjunction with Sheffield Hallam University that is led by the Sports Officer and is supported by Sheffield Hallam Active.

We are looking for volunteers to assist the Sports Officer in running various events on both Collegiate and City campus throughout the week and to spread the key messages that we will be promoting.

Commitment

Volunteers will be required between 28th January and 2nd February. This is a flexible role and days and hours to be organised with yourself and Hallam Union Sports Officer.

BUCS GATORADE NATIONALS – BUCS

Description

The BUCS Gatorade Nationals, the pinnacle of the domestic university sporting season, will be in Sheffield in February 2013. This season, 12 BUCS sports will be in action over three days of competition.

Volunteers will assist at the event in roles such as ticket selling and access monitors. All volunteers will receive event clothing, food/drink during their shift and travel expenses will be reimbursed (to a set limit). No experience is necessary as a full briefing will be provided. Volunteers will be acting as representatives for the event and ambassadors for the region; therefore the right attitude is essential.

Commitment

Volunteers will be required between 22nd- 24th February.

Essential Skills

Good communication, working as a team and be punctual and reliable.

EVENTS ASSISTANT – ST LUKE’S

Description

St Luke’s Hospice cares for people whose illnesses are no longer curable, enabling them to achieve the best possible quality of life during the final stages of their illness. They care for patients through their in-patient unit, out-patient clinics, and day care unit, as well as in their own homes through our Hospice at Home and Community Palliative Care Teams.

As an Events Assistant you will offer event support to the Event Fundraising Team.  Where necessary support event planning and ensure the smooth running of events.  You will help with set up, delivery and break down of events including stewarding, litter picking, crowd management etc.

Commitment

Volunteers will be required upon events. Times and dates to be organised with St Luke’s and volunteers.

Good communication skills

Bags of enthusiasm and a proactive attitude

A good knowledge of how events are run

Outgoing.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT VOLUNTEER – SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE

Description

The aim of this volunteer role is to enhance and compliment the role of Fire Service staff in meeting the needs of our local communities and help build closer links with them. We are looking for volunteers who can assist us to break down language barriers and help us to engage directly with the community. This role is an integral part of delivering the right service to the right people in the right places. We are looking to recruit a ‘pool’ of volunteers who can be called upon, as and when there is an organisational need to help and assist us with.

As a volunteer you will engage with those identified as vulnerable within your own community who may not have received a Home Safety Check.

Distribute and promote safety literature to those sectors of the community not yet accessed.

Identify and locate vulnerable people, and people who may be at high risk of having a fire, within your local community and refer to SYFR and relevant partner agencies.

Distribute safety materials within your community.

Share information with your existing networks and within your local communities

Promote safety events and initiatives.

Support staff at events by handing out information and engaging with visitors.

Commitment

This is a flexible role. Times to be discussed with the organisation.

ADVICE TEAM SUPPORT – SHELTER

Description

Shelter is a lifeline for anyone who is homeless or suffering in bad housing. You will need to have a positive attitude towards Homelessness and to the ethos of Shelter, be passionate and empathetic about supporting people when they are vulnerable.

As a volunteer you will be shadowing advice/case workers, assist clients in accessing accommodation, benefits and support, note taking in meetings and typing these up in accordance with Shelters standards, contacting clients and arranging meetings, observing court sessions and taking notes, researching cases and areas of law and writing basic letters / emails to clients / services

Opening and closing cases on our Client Information Case Management System (CICM).

Commitment

One day per week minimum suggested for around 6 months, but this is flexible

Essential Skills

Interest in social welfare law e.g. housing; welfare benefits; debt; community care

Ability to organise your own work, manage your time and work on your own initiative

Ability to use computers and programs such as Word and Excel

Effective communication skills and the ability to understand the needs of our customers

Willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including volunteering, health & safety, equality & diversity & confidentiality

CRB Requirements

A CRB is required for this opportunity. This can be provided  for all home students.
