Bring a Book to Life is a project which offers both community and placement volunteering options for students to get involved with each year. This year the community volunteering option involved students going into Norfolk Park Special School to work with groups of children to develop their literacy and language skills throughout February and March. The sessions consisted of volunteers selecting and reading a literacy text to the children and planning engaging activities around it for the children to do.
The placement volunteering option differed slightly; volunteers went into primary schools and helped the children with literacy from February to June; however this was in what ever way the teacher or school thought best. The schools involved included Norfolk Park Special School, Hallam Primary School, Springfield Primary School, and Fox Hill Primary School. Activities differed school to school, for example at Fox Hill Primary School volunteers worked on a ‘reading buddy’ scheme which the school have, where children read to a ‘buddy’ during literacy lessons. Where as at Hallam Primary School volunteers worked with children who have English as a second language to help them with language development. Bring a Book to Life is a great opportunity for students to gain teaching experience, and a fantastic chance to get involved in the local community!
