Healthy Eating

It’s easy to assume that eating a healthy diet can be a lot of effort and that we as students just haven’t got the time to cook from scratch. Some of us may feel that we haven’t got the skills or equipment (lets face it some of the kitchen facilities available to students are not top of the range and some of us have to share) but trust me – You can do it!

These nutrition pages are designed to expel these’s ideas and show you how simple it can be to eat healthily and enjoy your food, even if you only have access to a microwave or shared hob.

As a nutrition student myself I’m tempted to ramble on about the ‘healthy eating plate’ and government recommendations for fat, salt, sugar etc. but really the key to a healthy balanced diet is “everything in moderation”.

An important point if you do want to make changes to your diet is – start small. Any small change is beneficial, whether it be swapping to semi-skimmed milk instead of whole fat, swapping white bread for wholemeal or instead of skipping breakfast grab a piece of fruit on the way out of the door in the morning. These small changes are all part of a bigger picture and as you continue to make these small changes pretty soon you will be feeling the benefits of a healthier diet, and you are more likely to stick to it!

Don’t get me wrong we’re all partial to the odd late night pizza takeaway after a night on the town but again, it isn’t about denying your self of such things but switching to healthier alternatives when possible.

5 top tips for eating healthily

Let’s face it; we all know the basics to eating more healthily. We know about the importance of your five-a-day, eating less saturated fats, less salt and sugar, drinking more water, avoiding binge drinking and so on. But trying to do all this at once can just seem overwhelming, so here are a few simple tips to get you on the right path.

Boost your energy

Getting the most out of uni needs energy. You need to be able to balance your essays, revision, going out, weekends visiting your parents, plus all the stuff that comes with living on your own like shopping and cooking etc. So how do you do it?

Feeling stressed?

You are a very lucky person indeed if you can make it through uni without getting stressed. Whilst stress cannot always be avoided, here are a couple of tips to help you stay in control.

Weight worries

It can be hard to know if you are a healthy weight, and if you aren’t what to do about it. We recommend you speak to your doctor before making any diet changes.

Food Safety

Nutrition Health and Lifestyles student Noelle Vas has written a quick guide to food safety to make sure you prepare and store food in the safest way possible.
