From the 31st May as part of the university’s  commitment to supporting lifelong learning CPD Online will be offered free for 12 months to new graduates from pre-registration courses in the Department of Allied Health Professionals (AHP).

CPD Online is a dedicated online learning environment which provides information to facilitate transition into the workplace, support preceptorship activity (enhancing employability) and opportunities to engage in and evidence Continuing Professional Development (CPD)activity to help meet professional body and statutory requirements. In addition graduates will have access to the pebblePad personal learning space which can be used to document and record learning and development and evidence CPD. Thus CPD Online can be used for updating and refreshing your knowledge at a time, place and pace to suit you.

There are separate CPD Online sites for the different AHP groups – Radiotherapy & Oncology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging, Operating Department Practice & Paramedic Practice. In addition, all graduates will be enrolled on the CPD End of Life Care site as this crosses over into all arenas.

One of the major issues that affects the independence, wellbeing and health of vulnerable people is social connectedness. To build a city which is ready for the changes ahead, they need to make sure that vulnerable people in Sheffield have the help and support they need to be more connected to each other and to the city itself. Students make up a huge part of the local population in Sheffield: there are over 54,000 students, nearly 10% of the city’s population of 561,000.  You could play a vital role in improving the independence, wellbeing and health of vulnerable people.

The Council need students who would be interested in helping brainstorm ideas and think through the issues which Sheffield will be facing. If tobacco is cheap in the UK, the chances are it is illegal. Cigarettes and rolling tobacco should be sold at normal prices by trustworthy shops. Illegal tobacco is either counterfeit (fake but made to look real), bootlegged (bought duty free but not declared) or smuggled into the country.

Cheap tobacco and illegal tobacco can often be traced to criminal gangs. These profits make gangs more powerful and strengthen their grip on vulnerable people.

Sheila Paul, Consultant in Public Health at NHS Sheffield said: “Far from being a victimless crime, the trade in illegal tobacco has serious consequences for health, crime and community cohesion.

“Smoking remains one of the biggest causes of ill health in Sheffield. The presence of illegal tobacco, which is considerably cheaper than legal tobacco, makes it easier for children to smoke, discourages smokers from quitting and encourages them to smoke more”.

Ian Ashmore, Head of Environmental Regulation at Sheffield City Council said: “The illegal tobacco trade has a huge effect on our community.  The criminals involved are not concerned who they sell to and often supply to children and young people. We have active and effective teams of officers operating across the city to stamp out this criminal activity and seek to prosecute those responsible.”
