Kitchen Nightmares

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have launched their Kitchen Nightmares campaign to cut cooking related house fires. Last year, fire fighters went to more than 300 cooking related fires, resulting in dozens of people being taken to hospital and two fatalities. 

They have created a quick quiz on their Facebook page to try to teach people some kitchen safety basics- with the chance to win a £200 supermarket voucher.

Be wary of illegal tobacco sales

We all like a bargain but people who buy cheap tobacco can get more than they bargained for. A new campaign has been launched this month to highlight the harmful effects the trade of illegal tobacco is having on children and communities.

If tobacco is cheap in the UK, the chances are it is illegal. Cigarettes and rolling tobacco should be sold at normal prices by trustworthy shops. Illegal tobacco is either counterfeit (fake but made to look real), bootlegged (bought duty free but not declared) or smuggled into the country.

Cheap tobacco and illegal tobacco can often be traced to criminal gangs. These profits make gangs more powerful and strengthen their grip on vulnerable people.

Meningitis – make sure you know the facts!

healthEarly recognition of meningitis is important, so make sure  you are able to spot the symptoms:

  • a severe headache
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • drowsiness
  • confusion
  • seizures or fits
  • cannot tolerate bright lights
  • a stiff neck 
  • a blotchy red rash
