Varsity is an annual sporting competition between Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield. This year celebrates the 16th anniversary of the competition which also coincides with the 2012 Olympic Games. Varsity is carried out in a positive way by both Universities ensuring it is inclusive for the clubs involved but also for the supporters and the community.
Varsity is a celebration of sport at Sheffield, showcasing the cities fantastic facilities and capabilities for high profile sporting events. This competition provides an opportunity for all sports men and women to be equal regardless of the standard of play or the sport they are part of. Already the biggest of its kind, the Sheffield Varsity raises the profile of University sport and the positive attributes it carries with it.
Sport generally brings people together to support a common cause, and Varsity is no different. In previous years we have seen the membership of each University strengthen through this and this will hopefully continue to guarantee higher student involvement for both sporting and non sporting students.
Sport Officers from both Universities take the leading role in the planning stages, organisation, and final decision making surrounding the competition and ensure that decisions made are all in the students’ interests. The sport committee’s from both Universities also play a big part in the planning stages, organisation and the running of the competition.
Both Sport Officers will strive to build on previous years and make Varsity the biggest and best it can be by working together with the best interests of the students at the heart of the process, ensuring fair competition, increased participation both on and off the pitch and overall a successful event.
Varsity XV saw over 1000 students competing and over 8000 spectators supporting and watching the competition.
The event of the year is back and Varsity 2012 aims to be bigger and better than ever before celebrating the 16th Anniversary and also the year of the 2012 Olympic Games.
