About the Sports Union

Hallam’s Sports Union has the biggest membership base in the Student Union with over 1,300 members. We have 40 sports clubs offering both competitive and recreational sports so whether you are playing to win, or just for fun there will be a club for you.

When you become a member of Sports Union you get the chance to join as many clubs as you like, try new activities and travel across the country on club trips.

If you want to play competitively, many of our clubs are in the British Universities and Colleges Sports Competition programme (BUCS ). We have had a top 20 ranking, out of 150 other member institutions, for the past five seasons!

Some clubs have links with professional clubs in Sheffield such as Sheffield Hallam Hockey Club (Men’s and Women’s Hockey), Sheffield Eagles (Rugby League), Sheffield Arrows (Men’s Basketball), Sheffield Hatters (Women’s Basketball), and Rotherham Titans (Men’s Rugby Union).

Sheffield is famous for it’s outdoor sports so if you like climbing, fell walking, mountaineering, cycling or water sports, Hallam Union can offer these and more.

The Sport Union works in close partnership with Sport Hallam, the University’s Sport and Recreation Service.

About Sport Hallam

Sport Hallam is the name of the University’s Sport and Recreation Services. They manage all of the University’s sports facilities such as the fitness suites and sports halls, and provide a range of fitness classes and intra-mural opportunities. Most importantly for the Students’ Union through the Sport Hallam Sports Development Team, Sport Hallam are our main partner for the delivery of sport and recreational opportunities at Sheffield Hallam University.

By becoming a member of Sport Hallam and joining a Sports Union Club you have the opportunity to Enjoy, Compete, and Excel in sport at Sheffield Hallam University, but if you’re still not too sure what sport’s all about at Sheffield Hallam, please take a look at our videos on YouTube! Sports Development Team

The Sport Hallam Sports Development team support Sports Union clubs by managing all of the facilities and coaches and the partnerships that support some clubs. We collaborate with them and the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science in the delivery of the TASS hub based at Sheffield Hallam University, one of only 13 across the UK. Important to the delivery of this is the High Performance Hallam programme which is an athlete support package generally aimed at national level performing athletes. Contact Alex Bailey in the Sports Development office for more information about applying for High Performance Hallam.

Ryan Amos works most closely with the Sports Union clubs in terms of their facilities, coaching and development so please contact Ryan if you would like any more information in this area.
