It is more than likely you have never heard of Korfball and neither had most of the current team before joining the club. Korfball is an exciting sport and because few people have even heard of it, almost all players at university level are beginners. Those that have played before will know the sport is heavily focused on having fun, with the even mix of girls and boys giving way to great tournaments and social events.
Korfball is the only mixed team sport in the world. It is a team sport that both boys and girls can play together on equal terms, encouraging both teamwork and co-operation. It is a fast growing sport in the UK and all over the world. Student korfball is very popular and there are tournaments all over the country, there’s always something going on at SHU Korf!
Joining SHU Korfball is a great way to meet new friends; we have a good group of members who are very welcoming and sociable. Last year our 1st team came 7th in BUCS, a good achievement considering most of the team were new to Korfball and we hope to get a medal next year.
If you’re looking for a way to keep fit, make friends and play sport competitively then look no further, our fun training sessions and amazing socials have created a great buzz within the club and we look forward to getting new members this year.

Playing Korfball
A Korfball team has eight players; four boys and four girls. The court is split into two halves and to start the game the team is split into two groups of four (two male and two female) at each end of the court. One division attacking and the other defending. These groups swap roles after every two goals are scored.
Players are not allowed to shoot if they are ‘defended’. In sports like Basketball and Netball, the taller players have an advantage, however in Korfball this is different!
An attacker is ‘defended’ when;
- There is a defender between them and the basket.
- There is a defender at arms length.
- There is a defender actively trying to block the ball.
So, you can only shoot in Korfball if you are ‘free’ of your defender, which means you have to run around and co-operate with your team to create scoring chances!
University Korfball
Korfball is an exciting sport and because few people have even heard of it, almost all players at university level are beginners. This allows coaches to start from scratch and build up a squad of players who are friends as well as team mates.
