THE ACTIVITIES EXPLAINED

Touch Rugby
Touch Rugby is a fun filled, action packed game designed for males and females to get fit together in a friendly, informal and non contact activity. Everyone is welcome and no previous experience / knowledge is required.

Badminton
Badminton an easy sport to pick up. The shuttle is designed to slow down to encourage players to have more successful rallies allowing you to play the game properly right from the start. It’s a fantastic recreational game providing you with a wide range of physical movements and a feeling of physical fitness and good health.

Breakdance
A style of dance that evolved as part of hip-hop culture in New York City in late 20th Century.

Street dance
A style of dancing that involves improvisational movements and is social in nature encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and the other dancers.

Bellydance
A traditional form of dance from the Middle East, characterised by movements of the abdominal muscles.

Tchoukball
Tchoukball is a completely non-contact sport, which makes is very fast and dynamic. The ball cannot touch the floor, and must be bounced off a sprung net – if the ball touches the floor you’ve scored a point. If they other team catch it they play on with possession. Oh, and you can attack either end!!
It was developed in Switzerland and is played in 44 countries around the world and is one of the ever growing sports in the UK similar to Dodgeball has a team ethic and is another fantastic way to keep fit, meet new people, have fun with friends and above all GET ACTIVE!

HUBS Drop In
The HUBS Drop In session means you can come at any point between 12pm and 2pm on these two days. The session is designed around the idea that you can make activity fun and effective at the same time. We will insist that you work at a fairly easy pace. We also hope that you will take away some ideas that will help you to include a bit more activity in your day to day life and become more healthy and happy. Oh… and also, whilst having a bit of fun!

Pilates
Pilates is an exercise method, designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Based upon an anatomical understanding of the body’s muscular and skeletal systems, the Pilates teacher creates a comprehensive exercise programme for the client. Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises that integrate the whole body to re-educate and restore it to optimum muscular and skeletal function. Pilates can be beneficial for just about everyone, regardless of age and fitness level.

Salsa
A dance style associated with the salsa style of music and is normally a partner dance.

Dodgeball
Dodgeball is fun and inclusive sport that has been a massive hit in the US. It is simple to play and can be played with both men and women together. No skills required! All you need to do is learn the 4 D’s: Dodge, Duck, Dip and Dive and of course you got to throw out the opponent. It can be played in any size field but generally it is played on a regular size basketball court, either in-door and out door. It is Another great way to keep fit and Get Active whilst having a great time and meeting new people and socialising with friends.

Volleyball
Volleyball is an Olympic team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. Participants get the opportunity to try out the exciting game of Volleyball. Whether you can set, spike or serve you need not to have any relevant experience other than the enthusiasm to try something new and Get Active!

Canoe
Canoeing is a great outdoor adventure activity, and one that provides great opportunity to explore the surroundings in the countryside. Whether you have paddled in a canoe, Kayak or have ever been in a boat, this is an inclusive opportunity to come along and try something new whilst getting active at the same time.

Swimming and Waterpolo
Swimming is a great way to Get Active, it is one of the many Olympic sports that can find and utilise muscles in your body which you never thought you had, it’s a great way to keep fit and socialise with friends. Whether you can front crawl, breast stroke, back stoke or freestyle, why not come along and have a splash at Ponds Forge and try your hand at some swimming.

Park Run
The Sheffield Hallam parkrun is a free weekly event held every Saturday at Endcliffe Park on the west side of Sheffield. The run has been set up by Sport Hallam, the Sports services department of Sheffield Hallam University, as a means for our students, staff and our local community to come together on a regular basis to enjoy a shared community space and get physically active.

Cheerleading
A physical activity comprised of organised routines, usually ranging from one to three minutes which contains components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers and stunting.

Capoiera
Capoiera is a Brazilian martial art which is based on a combination of, dance, fighting acrobatics and music. Modern capoiera is divided in regional (Fast), angola (Slow) and contemporary capoiera in which both previous styles are developed and practiced. Capoiera is played on a rhythm, this ritual of practising through play makes participants more skilled and aware. Moves are based on evasion and not on blocking which is one of the reasons that there is not much physical contact in capoiera and the dance and theatrical aspects have a chance to develop through games in capoiera.

What is the cost of the activities?

For all of the above…… ALL ACTIVTIES ARE FREE

What do I need to bring?

Yourself and some comfortable and appropriate clothing, e.g. tracksuit trousers, shorts, t-shirts, swimwear, towels and trainers. You may also wish to bring a drink with you to keep you hydrated and refreshed.

Peak District Walk

Why not Get Active by coming along to the Peak District Walk, the Peak District is famous, in the UK, as walking country, having hosted industry for as long as man has recognised the value of rocks. Walking is a great way of keeping fit and where better to go on a long walk and take in the fresh country air that the Peaks. The walk will be 8 miles and the route can be found here.

What is the cost of the activity?
£5-£10 for the train plus food. If you have a rail card please bring it with you.

What do I need to bring?
Yourself, comfortable footwear and trousers (NOT jeans and trainers), warm clothing (hats, gloves and scarves), a waterproof top, some snacks and a bottle of water.
