Hallam’s Men’s Basketball Team to Shoot Hoops with American Side

Sheffield Hallam University’s men’s basketball first team will take part in an exhibition match against USA Select on Monday 13 September (6pm start) at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Sheffield Hallam will be keen to make amends for last years loss.

Sheffield Hallam’s opposition, USA Select, consists of American basketball players who have all completed their college or National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility and are looking to find professional opportunities internationally.

The event is the culmination of a partnership between Sheffield Hallam University and local EBL National League One side the Sheffield Arrows, who will also face the USA Select side at the event (8pm start).

Graham Gristwood takes Bronze at the World Universities Orienteering Championships

Graham Gristwood, a TASS Orienteer took a Bronze medal at the World University Orienteering Championships middle distance competition in Borlänge, Sweden (July 2010). After describing a really bad start to the race, he was the fastest over the last 3/4 of the race and pulled back up into 3rd place, just under 1 minute behind. This was an especially good result considering the mistake early on. He described his disappointment of the day before where he finished 12th place in the sprint distance, which his bronze medal makes up for! This gives Graham a really good platform for the World Championships in 2 weeks.

A month ago, Graham was also 5th in a sprint distance World Cup race in Stockholm - which was his best individual World Cup result.

Men's Volleyball Go To Europe!

Men’s Volleyball successfully secured 1st place in BUCS this year and they have now gone to take on Europe!

The Men’s Volleyball Team are currently in Warsaw, Poland competing at the 10th European Universities Volleyball Championship!

Success for Hallam at the BUCS Championships

The Hallam teams and athletes were out in force at the BUCS Championships in Sheffield from the 10th-15th March. Hallam successfully had teams/athletes qualify in Athletics, Basketball Women, Boxing, Climbing, Judo, Karate, Korfball, Swimming, Trampolining, Waterpolo, Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball.

Below are the results from the weekend:

Athletics: Zara Hohn GOLD in 60m Hurdles, Women’s 4 x 200m relay SILVER

Women’s Basketball: 6th in the Championship

Karate: Cheyne Phillips won 2 BRONZE medals

Korfball: Won SILVER in the Championships

Swimming: Finished 5th in the team Championships

Trampolining: James Blencowe came 5th and Hannah Kendrick 8th

Waterpolo: Won SILVER medal in the Championships

Volleyball: Won GOLD being crowned BUCS Champions for 2010 beating rivals Leeds Met 2-1.

The individuals and teams were a great asset to the University and as a Union we are immensely proud of there performance throughout the Championships. Well Done to all of them. Also huge thanks to the coaches that support the teams in the run up to the Championships and at the champs.

First race for mens rowing crew ends a success

The rowing team recently attended its first race of the season at South Yorkshire Head in which we entered two crews one womens and one mens. This was their first ever race in which we are very proud of what they achieved there. One of our Mens crews actually won their race representing Sheffield Hallam at the same event.

We are preparing to attend Trent Head of the river in Nottingham on the 28th of Feb and then the South Yorkshire Universities indoor champs on the 7th of March.

Trampolining BUCS Regionals in Nottingham

The weekend of 13/14th February was BUCS regionals in Nottingham. Hallam had some good results with Pete Ellis coming 2nd and James Mcardle 5th in Men’s intermediate. Megan Fowler came 8th in Advanced ladies and Rebecca Hales came 9th in the same category.

James Blencowe and Hannah Kendrick both had autmoatic qualification in the elite category.

The team did really well overall with many people getting through routines that they didnt think they could.

Former High Performace Hallam Athlete Wins Winter Olympic Place

Ellie Koyander (18) will represent Team GB at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Derbyshire teenager competes in moguls, a form of freestyle skiing involving fast technical skiing and aerial jumps that are scored on timing and difficulty. Currently competing on the FIS World Cup Freestyle circuit, Ellie has been awarded her place after being one of the elite top 30 athletes in the world who achieved the International Olympic Committee’s qualifying criteria.

sporting collaboration boost for womens football

A collaboration of South Yorkshire sporting expertise has been formed to provide Doncaster Belles with a pathway to top-flight women’s football.

The Belles are bidding to win a professional franchise in the new FA women’s Super League and have gained support from Sheffield United’s community scheme, their girls centre of excellence, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Hallam Students Union. Read more.
