Ben Slingsby (blue no. 10) making the golden goal against Warwick Bs in the Reed League final
Hallam Open Team started amazingly well scoring 12-0 in their very first match against Reading. Hallam Open lost only once on the first day to Bristol, who they later played again to take the win in a tense match up. At the end of day one the team captained by Steve Hickson were guaranteed 6th and looked very promising for a medal but heartbreakingly lost to Durham 3-2 at the start of day two. It was then a case of playing for 5th, which was achieved beating Dundee 6-2 with Ross Montgomery of Team GB helping the team take the win with some expertly delivered goals and blistering pace on the water. The Open Team brought home BUCS points for Hallam and placed the highest yet in BUCS Polo.
Hallam Ladies captained by Louise Clutton, who also played on the Open Team, did tremendously well earning them the highest BUCS placing to date. The ladies won their last match 4-1 against Lancaster taking them to 11th place overall. Amy Brentnall scored two of the goals in the final match, herself and another of the five players having only taken up the sport this year.
Most excitingly of all Hallam Canoe entered their first ever B Team into the Reed League and went all the way to the final. The final match of the weekend for Hallam proved to be a nail-bitter with Hallam Bs and Warwick Bs drawing 1-1 at full time, causing the game to go into extra time with next-goal-wins. Raising the tension again the game ticked over into a second half of extra time with Ben Slingsby finally making the fateful goal and bringing home a trophy for their undefeated tournament.
Very well done to all players involved, thank you for all the support from club members not playing during the weekend and to Tom Gibson for photographing all the matches. Let’s hope we continue on our progress streak next year!

We have recently had three Sheffield Hallam University teams in three different finals.
Firstly, our Men’s Rugby League team took on Glamorgan in the BUCS Shield final at St Mary’s school, on Thursday 15th March, where they were came away as BUCS Shield winners with a score of 38 – 14.
Secondly, our men’s futsal club took to the courts at EIS in the Futsal finals, on Wednesday 21st March, where they came up against some strong universities. The team put in a strong effort and came away 5th in the group after a great performance.
Thirdly, our men’s squash program travelled to Lancaster University on Wednesday 21st March, to take on Manchester Met in the Northern Conference Cup final. After a great season of 10 games with 9 wins this final was well deserved after beating some strong teams in the run up to this game. After a good game Team Sheffield Hallam came away winners with 4 games to 1 to make them the Northern Conference Cup winners.
Well done to everyone involved in those events and congratulations on your success.

Two Sheffield Hallam University students recently picked up multiple medals at the BUCS Karate Championships, held at Ponds Forge, on 17th and 18th March.
First year Sports Science student, Alex Gardner, 19, took Gold in Senior Kata and Silver in Senior Kumite -67kg.
Third year Sport Coaching student, Cheyne Phillips, 21, achieved Gold in Senior Kumite -84kg and Silver in Senior Kata.
There were over 500 competitors in the tournament with 46 athletes taking part in the Kata section and over 30 in each Kumite section.

Well done to the Sheffield Hallam University students who picked up two silver medals at the BUCS Indoor Athletics.
The competition took place during the final weekend in February, and saw universities from across the country competing in over 25 different disciplines. Tim Burn came second in the men’s 400m and Karla Drew took silver in the women’s 60m hurdles final.
The competition gave students the chance to compete in the spectacular English Institute of Sport Sheffield which should be a good build up to the test event at the Olympic stadium for the BUCS Outdoor Athletics in May.

Sheffield Hallam sports clubs recently took part in their annual club photo shoot at The HUBS. ‘Take That Photography’ visited Sheffield in February to take some great formal and fun shots of our sports clubs.
