The Sheffield Hallam Debating Society aims to get students involved with politics and active debate.
Most people, especially young adults, have little interest in politics and social issues because they think they don’t know anything about it or worse can’t do anything about it. This society will give you the base you need to get involved with the world around you, and help you understand the way things work in the world on many different levels. The society welcomes students of all disciplines, debates centre around issues of humanities – topics principally of civic virtue and human interest, be it mental wellbeing or societal; as such we welcome and encourage as wide a range of perspectives as possible.
We aim to bring together all students with a passion for discussion about the planet and all things going on! This year will be the societies first year as an open debating society, bringing together students of all different view points and experience. We’re run by students for students, the topics are tailored to be topical, stimulating and relevant. This year the society will be linked with the Speaker’s Office in Parliament, discussing issues relating to the ‘Paradox of Parliament” and reporting our ideas back to Mr. Speaker. We will also be working with the RSA (www.rsa.org) Sheffield Network & organising speakers on a range of subjects to lead debates and one-off lectures.
Of course, we’re open to suggestions. The group’s run democratically so if there’s a particular topic you’d like to debate one evening let us know by Facebook or email and we’ll either structure an evening around it if there’s enough interest or include it in a debate we meet once a fortnight, Wednesdays at Collegiate Crescent, Main Hall. See Facebook for more.
