Members FAQs

How do I join a society?
We suggest that you contact the society that you are interested in joining, to find out more about them.  This way you can be sure that they will be doing the type of activity you are looking for.  You may even be able to go a long to a meeting or session before you join.

Once you have decided to join a society, you need to complete the online registration form.  Then come along to the Hubs reception where you can pay any membership fee (some societies charge a fee, and some don’t, please check with the society).  You will then be given a membership card, which you must have with you at all society activities.

Where can I find information about the society that I am interested in?
There is information on the website.  There is a link on the right of each page within the societies section of the website titled A-Z of Societies.  This takes you to a list of the societies, and by clicking on the society that you are interested in you can find out more about them.  There will also be contact details for them, so that you can find out when they next meet and anything else not listed on the website.

Can I start a society?
Any Hallam student can start a society.  Guidelines for new societies and an application form can be found on the societies section of the website.  Simply click on Start a Society, which will take you to the relevant page.

We also advise you to read through the guides on the Resources page, so that you are familiar with the policies and procedures that societies must adhere to.

I joined a society but I have not heard from them, what should I do?
After joining a society we recommend that you contact them to find out when they will next be meeting.  It is also worth joining their Facebook group, which most societies have, as this is how they are likely to contact their members.

I have tried to contact a society, but they have not replied, what should I do?
If you haven’t heard from them within a week of contacting them, then please contact us in the Hubs (details on the Contact Us societies page).  We will chase up the society for you.

I have concerns about how a society is being run, who should I talk to?
You are welcome to talk to us at any time, if you have concerns about a society. We will then take any necessary action.  Most issues can be resolved in this manner.
