The Universities and Colleges Union, which is the trade union for academic staff in universities, recently asked its members to vote on whether or not to take industrial action over pay, pensions and job security.

A majority ‘yes’ vote has been confirmed and a national one-day strike has been announced for Thursday 24 March.

Further to the message sent out on Monday, the University has tried to find out which staff will be taking strike action so that any disruption is minimised, but staff are not legally obliged to say. Therefore, although many teaching activities could be affected, we are not able to identify the details in advance.

Please remember:

• This is a national dispute and cannot be resolved locally.
• The University has good relations with local trade unions and is committed to maintaining services to students wherever possible during any industrial action.
• Not all teaching staff are involved in this dispute.

Students should continue to treat Thursday 24 March as a normal day. University facilities, including the learning centres, helpdesks, administrative support and catering facilities, are not affected by the strike action and will be open as normal.

In addition:

• Coursework hand-in will operate as usual in all four faculties.
• There are no examinations scheduled for Thursday 24 March.
• Students will not be disadvantaged in assessment as a result of teaching activities not taking place.

When faculties know which activities are affected by strike action they will tell you using the established local communication channels. With this in mind, please monitor your texts, email, shuspace and Blackboard, and look out for any notices, for further information about what is happening and what you should do.
