Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, caused a stir with students in his Sheffield Hallam constituency last Friday by refusing to comment on whether he would keep to his pledge to vote against any increase in fees. One of the outcomes of the coalition agreement between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats will see Liberal Democrat MPs abstaining from voting on the Browne Review if it is to propose a rise in fees. This means that nearly all of the 57 Lib Dem MPs will break their pledge to vote against a rise in fees

Prior to the general election the Liberal Democrats received a lot of support from students as one of their key policies was the abolition of tuition fees, on 27th April 2010 the Lib Dem leader was quoted in the Daily Telegraph,

“Labour and the Conservatives have been trying to keep tuition fees out of this election campaign. It’s because they don’t want to come clean with you about what they’re planning… If fees rise to £7,000 a year, as many rumours suggest they would, within five years some students will be leaving university up to £44,000 in debt. That would be a disaster.”

When challenged at the meeting on the issue of tuition fees by Hallam Union President, Dani Beckett, Mr Clegg defended his decision to go back on his word by saying he “was not going to apologise” for the compromises of the coalition agreement. He then seemed to attempt to embarrass students who disagreed with him by pointing out those who were shaking their heads.

Following the public meeting Ms Beckett commented, “Students understand that compromises have to occur in order for the coalition to be a success, but these Lib Dem MPs have individually pledged to their constituents to vote against any rise is fees, how can students and the wider public have any confidence in politicians when an influential policy such as this is effectively reversed?”.

Caroline Dowd, Hallam Union President-elect, added “I intend to continue this pressing into my term of office, up to and after the Browne Review, I think it is appalling that MPs are going against their word, Sheffield students have already faced discrimination on election day and now to hear that their vote will count for nothing does nothing to inspire confidence in Clegg’s New Politics”.

Hallam Union’s lobbying is part of the wider “Vote for Students” campaign being coordinated by the National Union of Students with a Facebook group containing over 17,000 people and continuing to grow.
