Student Trustees 2011/12

The votes are in and your Student Trustees for 2011/12 are:

Kirsty Garner

KirstyKirsty Is Ready, Supporting Team You!

What experience and skills I bring to the role:
As a first year student at Sheffield Hallam University, I present myself as an empty glass with no bias. In the past I have held the position of a School Sports Ambassador (SSA) where I gained a number of transferable skills to ensure a smooth transition to the role of a Student Trustee. In this role I would be responsible for putting across a student voice and ensuring that every voice is heard. I believe that I am good at putting people’s opinions across as a strong willed and confident person. • With my passion for business and finance, proven through my 98% in Applied Business coursework, I incorporated skills in organisation and planning that I would need for this role. • I will present your voices to the board on behalf of all students to make a positive impact on this Union. • I, as your Trustee, will transfer my theoretical and practical experiences in finance and business planning to help make this happen.

In this role I will achieve for students:
During my year in office, I will operate strategically in order to allow me to provide a service through which the voices of students can be heard. To do this, I will aim to supply a structure of support where people can go in confidence to voice their opinions. When talking to students, they voiced complaints that last year, during exam/revision times, resources were stretched due to refurbishments. Therefore I shall campaign to make sure that any future refurbishments are appropriately timed and would be a beneficial investment to the university and its students. Hence emphasising a student’s point, “If it’s not broken don’t fix it!” Additionally, I will campaign to make course-specific specialist programmes readily available in the library and increase resources such as text books that are recommended by lecturers to relieve unnecessary stress. I will also encourage staff to provide a book list pre-enrolment; this should help with student preparation and I have already convinced one lecturer to do so and promote this idea. Equality and freedom of speech are important to me; as your representative I shall endeavour to make your voice heard. Your Union, your say, your vote! Make it count!

What does representation mean to you?
It means that I can make a positive impact for students, by making students feel good, I feel good!

What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?
To campaign for more resources and to make them more readily available in the library as this was voiced to me the most when I spoke to students

I am the best candidate because…….
I strive to listen and I have a passion for making everyone heard. With this position, not only will I gain self self-fulfilment but I will also be making a change for the better.

Umang Agarwal

UmangAre you thinking what I am thinking?

What experience and skills I bring to the role:
Hi, I am Umang Agarwal hailing from the largest democracy in the world. I am new to Hallam as I am doing a top-up course. I have experience in handling high level posts (Senate Councillor, President of a vital school Club, Member of Core-Committee for College Fest etc.) as I have done in several occasions in School & College. I have also been elected as a Course-Rep. for 2011-2012 I am a good orator, leader, disciplined and responsible for my duties as well as in accounting and I know how to co-ordinate, communicate and work in Teams. I am enthusiastic and motivated all the time and I never back off from any challenge before giving a try. I am a big believer in the ‘mirror test.’ All that matters is if you can look in the mirror and honestly tell the person you see there, that you’ve done your best. I have also been awarded Outgoing Best Disciplined Student from my school and possess good marks in academics in my University where I studied 2 years before joining Hallam.

In this role I will achieve for students:
I can make a promise (which is not meant to be broken), if I am elected I am not disappointing anyone for the purpose I would stand there in the Union. My main goal would be to ensure fair justice is being given to the Union as well as those who form a vital part of it which is the students. Also I would personally ensure that every student is given vital importance and treated equally. Being a part of Union means being a part of a family where it is all assured that every single penny is used for the well-being of the charity and there is no mismanagement in the account of the Union as it has been created for a noble cause in which no evil should have an eye upon it. One simple reason for voting me is that I always try to stick up with my words and never ever get involved in smearing. I am honest, trust-worthy, helpful and reliable. Rest is up to the members to decide as I always and will respect their decision.

What does representation mean to you?
It means a voice which I always hear in my head. It’s not my voice but It’s the voice of everyone whom i represent whether they vote for me or not, it doesn’t matter

What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?
My main priority would be to ensure fair justice is given to the money which is present in the Hallam Union for a charity and not for making profits.

I am the best candidate because…….
I will never say that I am the best but will also make sure that I am not behind the best as well. It’s the members who decide from their heart that who is actually the best.
