Vote Kat for Societies Rep: little woman, big promises!
What experience and skills I bring to the role:
Having been part of the Drama Society for three years and been on the committee for two years, I have gained a wide range of experience in team work, delegation, time management and most importantly confidence building. I am currently in the process of collaborating with The Improv Society, SHU Band and Hallam Harmonies in order to build relationships between SHU Drama and other Societies. I know that many societies are keen to start up or build on previously established collaborations, and this is definitely an area I am passionate about developing further. I was also on the Societies Standing Committee last year so I know how the union works and what their aims are for the Societies that are available for students. I helped to organise a networking session which welcomed all societies to come together and find out more about each other. It was a great success and something that should be continued. Having already been a part of enhancing and building upon the relationships between different societies, I really feel that I can bring a lot to this role by expanding and improving these key elements which make Hallam Societies the best societies.
In this role I will achieve for students:
Being a positive and motivational person, I will use these attributes positively by helping societies develop within the Union and helping them to become more publically know in the wider Sheffield community. I would like to show Societies committees that as well as having the Union staff available, they have a support system of students (the Standing Committee and I) behind them to encourage and enhance their own agendas. I would like to improve the awareness of newly formed Societies as its one area I believe needs improvement. From sitting on the Societies Standing Committee and Union Council last year I was able to see the process of how new societies are formed and approved within the Union, but I never really heard what happened to the Societies afterwards. This I feel needs to change. I would like to take a key interest in training new committees, helping them to understand how the Union is there to help them, as well as how they can help themselves get members from posters to taster sessions and sponsorships. Working alongside Helen and Deborah, these aims will help to develop Societies through collaboration with each other and exposure to the student community.
What does representation mean to you?
I believe representation is the act of working on behalf of the majority, and is the most important element of this role. If elected I will make sure that I first and foremost do exactly what our Societies want.
What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?
My main priority would be to improve the relationships between our Societies, by introducing workshops where Societies can showcase and teach what they do to other Societies and vice versa.
I am the best candidate because…….
I believe I am the best candidate for this role because I have had a vast amount of experience in working not only within the Union, but for a large group of people. I am confident I will be able to provide the time and dedication that this role deserves, in order to get the best outcome for all of the Societies here at Hallam.
