The 2011/12 positions that you can nominate yourself for are:

Union Council is the highest decision making body within the representative structures of Hallam Union, it is responsible for policy making, campaigning, holding elected officers to account and ensuring the successful running of elections.

Union Council mandates Hallam Union by setting policies, campaign priorities and giving Union Council Representatives the chance to hold elected officers to account on behalf of the Students at Sheffield Hallam University.

The Chair presides over meetings of Union Council by allowing everyone the chance to have their say in a relaxed non-confrontational setting together with ensuring the smooth running of the meeting.

Hallam Union is a charity and as such must have a Board of Trustees to oversee key decision making which relates to the future of Hallam Union. The trustees have a responsibility to ensure that Hallam Union is not threatened by wrong financial decisions, does not break the law and that the work that is being done is for the benefit of its members – Hallam students.

The trustees are not a part of the representative side of Hallam Union, which is handled by Union Council, Referenda and Assembly.

The Trustee board consists of:

  • President (Chair)
  • Democracy and Communications Officer
  • Welfare and Community Officer
  • Education Officer
  • Activities Officer
  • Sports Officer
  • 4 External Trustees
  • 4 Student Trustees

Student Assembly is an open meeting that all SHU students can attend, this gives students the chance to draw attention to certain issues. There is no need to do this formally, students can just turn up and raise their point.

The purpose of this role is to preside over and chair Assembly meetings. In this role you will be responsible for chairing the meetings of Assembly and ensuring everyone has the chance to have their say in a relaxed non-confrontational space.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Promote the assembly to members of the Union and encourage engagement.
  • Give notice of Assembly meetings to the Assembly reps, the Officers and the members of the Union.
  • Be responsible for putting together an agenda in liaison with the secretary or their nominated delegate.
  • Chair the meetings and facilitate discussions around issues affecting students as students.
  • Aid the assembly reps in preparation of items for Union Council.

The purpose of this role is to act as the main link the between Assembly and Union Council. In this role your job would be to ensure that matters which the Assembly have agreed on are taken to Union Council for either discussion or voting on and then feeding back to the Assembly.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Aid the Chair in promoting the assembly to members of the Union.
  • Be responsible for putting together an agenda in liaison with the secretary or their nominated delegate.
  • Participate in discussions and help the Chair in encouraging others to do so.
  • Prepare and present the agreed views of the assembly to Union Council.
  • Communicate and feedback from Union Council to the Assembly.

Volunteering Rep duties and responsibilities:

  • To work to heighten the role of volunteering across all aspects of Union activity, and with students, the University and the community
  • Take an overview of all volunteering projects and activities, monitoring and reviewing them when appropriate
  • To attend Union Council and all relevant standing committees
  • To network with relevant student volunteering groups, and voluntary and outside organisations, attending relevant meetings as appropriate
  • To work alongside staff to support and encourage student led volunteering projects and initiatives
  • Support the Activities Officer in their role
  • Black Minority Ethnic (BME) Student Rep – Elect YOUR self – Nominations open NOW- 15th October!Responsible for:

Black and Minority Ethnic Students Rep duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensure full participation and representation of BME students to the Union and the University
  • To attend Union Council and relevant standing committees.
  • To be the first point of contact for black and minority ethnic students, and to ensure they are able to participate fully in the Union and the University without fear of discrimination
  • To coordinate and publicise relevant Union campaigns.
  • Support the Welfare and Community Officer in their role

Media Rep duties and responsibilities:
 

  • Promote, support and encourage student led media initiatives
  • To attend Union Council and relevant standing committees.
  • To promote student led media at Hallam, encouraging volunteers to participate.
  • To coordinate all student led media activity
  • To liaise with the Marketing and Communications Staff Team, and other staff groups, as appropriate
  • Support the Democracy and Communications Officer and Activities Officer in their roles

Academic Rep duties and responsibilities:

  • To attend Union Council, and relevant standing committees
  • To represent students on local and national educational and academic issues within the Union and the University
  • To coordinate and publicise relevant Union campaigns
  • Support the Education Officer in their role

Societies Rep duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop Hallam Union’s societies and promote new societies to students, the University and the wider community
  • To attend Union Council and relevant standing committees.
  • To be the first point of contact for issues relating to societies.
  • To assist with the co-ordination and training of societies’ officers.
  • To work with relevant staff groups to support societies
  • Support the Activities Officer in their role

Why should I nominate myself?
All positions will give you great leadership experience plus campaigning, budgeting and events management skills (to name but a few!) but you will also have real influence with University decision makers. So if you want to improve the student experience at Hallam, and improve your CV while you are at it this is the job for you.

All of the above positions are elected positions which means we shall hold a cross campus vote to see who students want to take up these positions. If you nominate yourself for one of the above positions you will need to submit an elections pledge and campaign if you want students to vote for you.
