Policies

Policy is set by Union Council or by Referendum. They refer to the rules of the Union and any student can submit a policy. The Democracy and Communications Officer holds and maintains the policy register.

Why are they important?

They address the issues which are important to Sheffield Hallam students

How are they passed and adopted?

They are passed by two thirds majority vote of Union Council or Referendum and must be consistent with the Articles of Governance and Bye Laws.

Who has to abide by them?

The Officer Committee (individually and collectively), Union Council members, Union Representatives, Members of other committees, Officials and staff of the Union (in the course of their duties with the Union)

How long does a policy last for?

3 calendar years

Can you alter a policy?

No alteration may be made within the first year of adoption, and Union Council can vote on alterations with a two thirds majority vote.

How do policies lapse?

- If it contravenes, or is inconsistent with any laws, articles of governance or Bye Laws
- If it is voted on with two thirds majority vote at Union Council
- After 3 calendar years from the date the policy was adopted.

How do I submit a policy?

You can submit any policy to the Democracy and Communications Officer via uusdemocracy@shu.ac.uk
