The results are in and your NUS Annual Conference Delegates for 2011/12 are:

 Stephen Dering

An independent, experienced voice for Sheffield Hallam

What experience and skills I bring to the role:

I am a part time post-grad facilities management student combined with managing a not for profit social firm creating employment opportunities for disabled people. Previously I worked for Shelter, the homelessness charity and also within government This means I can draw on both my experience as a student and my professional career in campaigns and service delivery to work as part of Sheffield Hallam’s NUS delegation to review the conference agenda and make a significant contribution to debates on issues affecting us here at SHU.

I plan ro represent Hallam Union by:

Consulting with union members about NUS, its role, the agenda and motions put forward for debate at the conference. Promoting Sheffield and in particular, our Union, at the conference. I will also be an independent choice not whipped by party political lines.

What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?
Putting forward the views of Hallam Union at NUS conference

How do you think the NUS can benefit Hallam students?
NUS has a powerful opportunity to influence government thinking. However at the moment it only gets mainstream press coverage during student protests. NUS needs to be more visible in playing a key role in shaping government policy to the benefit of Hallam students

I am the best candidate because:
I have developed a professional career and returned to university as a part-time post grad student. This enables me to draw on a wealth of experience to support the Hallam delegation.

It is important that all policies of the NUS are of interest and relevance to our students here at Hallam. with the fee rising in the coming academic year i feel it in important to put pressure on the NUS and universities to give US students worth for what we are paying as well as making our student experience the best it can be.

I plan to represent Hallam Union by:

In my various roles throughout the years I’ve always taken on the chair role where I remain impartial and collate everyones views. I plan on doing the same for NUS conference and getting as many views as possible from across the university to give a true representative view.  Jessica Goldstone

VOTE JESS FOR NUS

What experience and skills I bring to the role of NUS delegate:

As a third year student, a former course rep, an active member of student union societies and the current union Academic Rep I believe I have the experience needed to represent my fellow students. I also have first-hand experience of NUS Conference because I was a delegate last year!

I plan to represent Hallam Union by:

I will take the issues you care about to a national level. I will vote for an NUS Executive that will best represent you and I will vote for the policies that will make your student experience better. I want to represent the students of Sheffield Hallam University and make sure our voices are heard!

What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?

These days it is more important than ever to make sure that the NUS understands the frustration and anger of students. I will fight for your rights, against massive cuts and outrageous fees. I will support the NUS in its campaign against the rise in tuition fees and the atrocious cuts to EMA.

From next year Hallam will be charging fees of £8500. The NUS must support future students by ensuring our university, as well as others round the country, work to widen participation. Education should be open to everyone and fees should not be a barrier to this. Even before the fees increase many students already face huge financial difficulties. I will lobby the NUS to campaign both locally and nationally to ensure our students are getting the best from their time at university. I will get the message across that the students of Sheffield Hallam are not happy and we want something done about it!

How do you think the NUS can benefit Hallam students?

NUS can make a real difference to the lives of students in Sheffield. As the biggest student union in the country it is the only organisation that has the power and the opportunity to make real changes on a national level. NUS Conference is our opportunity to tell them exactly what we want so they can act on it in the coming year. This is a crucial time for students and we need to know that NUS has our back.

I am the best candidate because ….

I truly care about the students of Sheffield Hallam University. Electing me will mean you are represented by someone who really does have your interests at heart. I will be entirely focused on putting across your views and promoting your interests. This is YOUR union and I will make sure that YOUR voice is heard.

 What is the NUS?

The National Union of Students is one of the largest democratic organisations in Europe with 5.2 million members, NUS has a large responsibility for representation, campaigning and supporting Student Unions at a local level. You will almost certainly know of the famous Discount Card, NUS Extra, getting you deals at Topshop and elsewhere, but NUS is much more than that.

Hallam Union is affiliated to the NUS which means we can take advantage of the vast political and commercial benefits of NUS membership.

How NUS Works…

NUS National Executive Committee is comprised of 27 national officers, some full time but most part time. Together they form the body that runs NUS, carrying out campaign work, supervising research and enacting policy passed at Annual Conference.

Annual Conference is where most of these officers are elected, including the President and five Vice Presidents; Union Development, Higher Education, Society and Citizenship, Further Education and Welfare and Student Rights.

The rest of the National Executive Committee are elected at other relevant student conferences. For example, the LGBT Students Officers are elected by LGBT students each spring, and the President of NUS Wales is elected by students at NUS Wales conference.

Annual Conference involves hundreds of students, and takes place each March or April. Besides electing the national leadership for the following year, it also passes policy on what NUS should be campaigning on and so shapes its priorities. Therefore Annual Conference is the most sovereign representative body of NUS.

What is the NUS Conference?

The Annual Conference is where most of the NUS officers are elected including the President and five Vice Presidents covering the following areas; Union Development, Higher Education, Society and Citizenship, Further Education and Welfare and Student Rights. NUS officer elections are similar to the elections Hallam Union holds to elect its officer team, except NUS officers represent students from across the country.

The Annual Conference involves hundreds of students, and takes place each March or April. Besides electing the national leadership for the following year, students get to vote on the policies and decide the direction and priorities for the NUS for the following year.

Each year, every student Union that is affiliated to NUS is invited to send a delegation of elected students to represent their Union and members at the Annual Conference. As Hallam Union is affiliated with the NUS we invited any hallam student to run for election for a chance to go to the conference. Every student will get the chance to vote for the person they would like to go to the NUS conference on their behalf. The Union president, (Jake Kitchiner) attends as delegate leader.

A minimum of six people are able to attend NUS Annual Conference.
