Union Council is the highest decision making body within the representative structures of Hallam Union. It is responsible for policy making, campaigning, holding elected officers to account and ensuring the successful running of elections.

Union Council is attended by students who have been elected, by Hallam students, into representative positions within the Union.

Union Council mandates Hallam Union by setting policies, campaign priorities and giving Union Council Representatives the chance to hold elected officers to account on behalf of the Students at Sheffield Hallam University.

The Union Council Chair presides over meetings of Union Council by allowing everyone the chance to have their say in a relaxed non-confrontational setting together with ensuring the smooth running of the meeting. This opportunity will look great on your CV and give you great business and facilitation experience. It will also give you loads to talk about in job interviews!

Nominations are now closed for: Student Assembly

Information about the candidates running for election will be uploaded shortly.

Student Assembly is an open meeting that all SHU students can attend, this gives students the chance to draw attention to certain issues. There is no need to do this formally, students can just turn up and raise their point. It gives any SHU student the opportunity to have their say on any issue that they may feel strongly about.  Any issues raised will be taken to Union Council for appropriate actions/decisions to be made. Student Assembly is held at points throughout the year at both campuses.

The purpose of this role is to act as the main link between Assembly and Union Council. Assembly Reps ensure that matters which the Assembly have agreed on are taken to Union Council for either discussion or voting on and then fed this back to the Assembly. This opportunity will look great on your CV and give you loads to talk about in job interviews!

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Aid the Chair in promoting the assembly to members of the Union.
  • Be responsible for putting together an agenda in liaison with the secretary or their nominated delegate.
  • Participate in discussions and help the Chair in encouraging others to do so.
  • Prepare and present the agreed views of the assembly to Union Council.
  • Communicate and feedback from Union Council to the Assembly.

Assembly Chair

The purpose of this role is to preside over and chair Assembly meetings. Assembly Chair is responsible for chairing the meetings of Assembly and ensuring everyone has the chance to have their say in a relaxed non-confrontational space. This opportunity will look great on your CV and give you great business and facilitation experience. It will also give you loads to talk about in job interviews!

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Promote the assembly to members of the Union and encourage engagement.
  • Give notice of Assembly meetings to the Assembly reps, the Officers and the members of the Union.
  • Be responsible for putting together an agenda in liaison with the secretary or their nominated delegate.
  • Chair the meetings and facilitate discussions around issues affecting students as students.
  • Aid the assembly reps in preparation of items for Union Council.
