Congratulations to both candidates.

Should Hallam Union lobby Sheffield Hallam University to issue a budget based on the demands set out below?

- A living wage of £7.45 for all workers and auxiliary workers employed by and on behalf of the university

- The university to reject the recent fee increases, as a step towards free education

- The refusal to engage in course privatisation

- All student halls should be taken back in to university ownership

These demands should be met without detriment to the education of students; or the pay, or conditions, of the staff. The extra funds required for this budget shall be taken from executive pay, and demanded from central government.

For (YES)

Hallam union should make a stand against managerial and corporate greed, in favour of staff and student wellbeing. Our Vice-Chancellor is on £244,000 per year whilst student fees have been tripled, his pay has increased and those at the bottom are subcontracted and are still on minimum wage. Whilst this happens, our education and housing are put into private hands with no accountability to students. Modules going with no contact time and rents increasing, in favour of profits over our wellbeing. It is time our union put forward concrete demands to the university, and linked up all cuts issues to stop the pitting of one service against another.

Against (NO)

The 6 student officers here at Hallam Union are in the fortunate position of having a ‘Birdseye view’ of issues that not only affect Sheffield Hallam, but also what issues affect the sector. Taking our knowledge of what issues are currently affecting our students we are asking you to vote No in the referendum for the following reasons;

- If Sheffield Hallam University ‘reject’ the fee increases and charge £3,375 again, due to HEFCE (government) funding cuts the University will simply go bankrupt and you will have nowhere to study. It is irrational to ask/lobby the university to put itself in this position. Vote No in the referendum to avoid this.

- If we brought halls back into our ownership the capital cost would be huge to the university, this would then be passed onto students via rent payments. Currently with the accommodation partnerships we have, Sheffield Hallam offer the cheapest (on average) first year accommodation in the country. Vote No in the referendum to keep the cost of accommodation in Sheffield the lowest in the country.

You will vote on the referendum as a whole (encapsulating all four outlined points). We fundamentally disagree with two of the four points raised, and by lobbying on them it would be of huge detriment to the University. We ask you to vote No in this referendum.

Results

Voting took place on Tuesday 16th April. The total number of votes cast was 239. With a turnout of 0.7%

The Union’s Bye Laws state that ‘A Referendum shall not be valid unless more than 2% of Full Members, or 400 Full Members, whichever is the greater, vote in the Referendum.’ (Bye Law 14.20)

Hallam Union Elections Myth Busters Booklet

Hi, I’m Howard Duffy, your Democracy and Communications Officer.

Hallam Union is a democratic organisation and this section of the website will help you understand exactly what that means.

In a nutshell though, it means that students are at the heart of everything the Union does. We do this by giving students a chance to hold representative positions in the Union. Think of it like a general election when you vote for an MP to represent your local area in national government decisions. In a Union, you will vote for students who will represent you in Union decisions.

I think it’s really important to get involved in Union democracy as you really do get to influence how things are run. I myself put myself forward to become the Democracy and Communications Officer and was voted into position by Hallam students in March 2012. Now it’s my job to promote the importance of Union democracy for this academic year.
