BME Rep 2011/12

The results are in and your BME Students’ Rep is:

Akin Lisk-Carew

AkinDeeds not Words, Vote Akin

What experience and skills I bring to the role:
My experiences from being president of the ACS and travelling across Africa, Europe and Asia have given me the pleasure to work with and understand different cultures. Having the charisma of working with other people in the past will be a warm introduction to my role. I believe the university needs that extra push to support Its BME and I know I can be that person.

Apart from experience I am very professional with my approach to various situation. With this I am willing to share and embrace those to promote refinement within our community.

In this role I will achieve for students:

Cut straight to the point I will push Halal food within the university. We have over 20% Islamic students in Sheffield Hallam University and not a single meal or sandwich is Halal. I will be a backing voice for those afraid to speak up. Those who have points to make but need a voice to air it out. I will organize networking sessions to boost moral and professionalism within our black and ethnic minorities. I am not a Representative but merely someone to voice our opinion. Together We will represent.

1. What does representation mean to you?

According to the oxford dictionary. Representations means the act or state of Representing someone or something.

Represent means to speak and act for, sometimes by a delegated authority.

Now I agree with the word, but to represent a whole race and a diverse Ethnicity is a debatable topic. I’m not going to represent or be a “Representation” but provide opportunity for people to represent themselves.

2. What would you see as the main priority if you were elected?

To support, Cater for and Encourage.

3. I am the best candidate because…….

I am very cultured and aware of current situations.
I have experience with similar positions and have exceled in them.
I know the boundaries but think outside the box.
But most Importantly I know how to communicate with people and support.
