Fight against Fees continued: National Rally for Young People, 29th January, Manchester

There is rally in Manchester on 29th January against the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), the increase in university tuition fees, record levels of youth unemployment, and the coalition government’s programme of cuts that are hitting Britain’s young people hard.

‘A Future that Works’ will highlight the impact of the recession and the coalition government’s cuts programme on young workers and young people in general – and promote the trade union, student movement and partner organisation campaign against the cuts and for the alternatives. ‘A Future that Works’ is being hosted by the TUC in partnership with the National Union of Students and the UCU.

Hallam Union Officers will be attending this protest, but any student that would like to attend this is welcome (this would be at your own cost). We will be planning some local action as well which we will let you know about in advance!

Further details about the march:
Assemble: 10:30am (Location to be confirmed)
March: 11:30am (Route to be confirmed)
Followed by rally
For now we can confirm the following details about the Rally:
A Future that Works: A TUC Rally for Young People
When: Saturday January 29th at 1pm (assemble from 12.30pm)
Where: Platt Fields Park, Manchester

You can also:

Email directly your local MP about how EMA has made a difference to their education and why it should not be scrapped. It is crucial that MPs see the personal stories in this campaign and that they aren’t blinded by unrepresentative statistics. This can be done through www.writetothem.com and we are recommending that you email to Michael Gove and Simon Hughes as well as your MP

http://www.righttorecall.co.uk/

Come down to the HUBs for 12:15pm on Wednesday 24th November and we will make our way up to the Town Hall.

Please come along and fight against an increase in tuition fees 

In addition if you have any spare time this week then please let us know (uusdemocracy@shu.ac.uk) as we will be going out into Nick Clegg’s constituency and asking residents to sign the right to recall petition.

Fees Protest Cancelled

Sheffield Hallam students union had planned to organise a peaceful protest outside the constituency office of Nick Clegg MP this coming Thursday, the 18th November. It has been brought to our attention that this peaceful protest, may be in danger of being hijacked, should we proceed as planned.

We have therefore decided to cancel our peaceful action, and continue to exert pressure on our politicians, encouraging them to keep to their promises and pledges on fees, by getting thousands of constituents to add their name to the Right to Recall petition; www.righttorecall.org.uk

Sheffield Hallam students union condemns the use of violence. We do not condone criminal damage, and strongly advice our members not to take part in the Education Action Network activity taking place in Sheffield later this week.

Demolition Day!

Well today was the big day. Around 50,000 students, lecturers and members of the general public took part in what is being labelled as the biggest student demonstration in a generation, jointly organised by NUS and the University and College Union (UCU).

Your Officer team were there along with all the Hallam students who lent us their time and support.

Caroline stands up for students on the politics show

Your Union President Caroline Dowd was on The Politics Show on Sunday 17th October talking about the dangers of lifting the cap on student fees.

The Browne Review

Hundreds of students from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam gathered outside Nick Clegg’s constituency office at 12 noon today to present him with his ‘VOTE FOR STUDENTS’ card. Nick Clegg made a pledge to students during his election campaign that he would fight against any increases in tuition fees.

Students in Sheffield feel let down by Nick Clegg, as he may go against this pledge and vote for the Lord Browne review recommendations. This protest shows that Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield Student’s will continuously put pressure on Nick Clegg to keep his pledge.

Caroline Dowd, Sheffield Hallam Student’s Union President commented ‘It really is great to see so many students and the media here today, the Lord Browne Review will change the landscape of higher education and make it less accessible for those students from lower income backgrounds. This is why we need to lobby the MPs who signed a pledge for students to ensure that they keep their promise, and make education about educational ability and not the ability to pay!’
