Sheffield has become home for over 60,000 students, studying within our two universities.
Many students own bikes, and use them as a means of travelling around the city and commuting between lectures.
It doesn’t matter whether your bike is an expensive top of the range model or a less expensive bike that gets you from A to B, the fact is, it’s your bike and you’ve paid for it.
South Yorkshire Police are committed to reducing crime against our student population, including bike thefts. We are actively patrolling student areas to deter, prevent and detect crimes, but in order for us to be successful we need your help.
To help you keep your bike safe we have listed a number of safety precautions to
SECURE YOUR BIKE and make it difficult for thieves to steal.
Always lock your bike when leaving it unattended, and make sure you lock it to a solid object, to prevent it from been lifted up and carried off.
Always use a good solid lock to secure your bike
If possible, secure your bike in a garage or a shed
If you have detachable parts, like wheels and seats, make sure that they are also secured.
MARK YOUR BIKE – Make it easier to get back if it’s stolen
Take a note of the number on the frame of your bike, this number will be stamped into the metal around the bottom bracket.
Register your bike and other personal belongings free at www.IMMOBILISE.com. it only takes a minute to register.
You can record your bike’s frame number, your mobile phone IMEI number and the serial numbers of your laptop and iPod. If your property does get stolen, and recovered by police, it means that we can get them back to you.
If your bike is stolen, call the police and give them the make, model, colour and frame number on your bike, it will make it easier for the police to get it back to you.
Sheffield is a safe city, and anyone and everyone who wants to ride a bike should be able to do so.
By taking the above steps, you can help us to tackle bike crime, and keep Sheffield’s bikes secure.
