Hallam Union.

Campaigns

The campaigns we run at Hallam Union aim to be as diverse as our membership. Representing over 28 000 students we aim to provide opportunities for all students to run, and participate in campaigns. Being a democratic organisation, the campaigns must be run for students, by students which ensures they are kept relevant and focused. If you wish to campaign around a particular issue please e-mail uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk

Tuition Fees

(contact uusfinance@shu.ac.uk)

Currently the union has no policy on tuition fees, and higher education funding. We believe that this is such an important issue that the Union Executive committee alone cannot decide what is the best course to persue - whether it be to campaign to keep the cap, for a form or graduate tax/contribution, or for free education - we want to hear your opinions - and we hope to have policy made at our Anual General Meeting which is to be held 2nd December at the HUBS where all Hallam students get a say.

Prior to this we will organise a series of events to spark debate and gain student opinion to best inform the unions campaign for next semester - check back later for more info!

Black History

(contact uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk)

October saw black history month - a series of talks, films, cultural shows and debates with the idea to inform people of different cultures and histories which are not covered by the national curriculum - hence the month taking place at the beginning of the academic year. We feel that black history should not just be confined to one month, and so we will be continuing our programme of events throughout the year - November and December will see events around the civil rights movement, and the history of Latin America.

Anti Racist, Anti Fascist

(contact uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk)

With the electoral success of the fascist BNP in Rotherham we see the need to build a movement against racism and discrimination more than ever. The BNP will attempt to gain a Member of European Parliament (MEP) in 2009 June elections - providing them, not just with more funds, but also political legitimacy. We maintain that the BNP is a fascist organisation. In the interest of students the community and equality, the BNP must be smashed. We support Love Music Hate Racism which helps to expose and isolate racist ideas. The group is run by students and anyone can get involved. We also work with Unite Against Fascism who campaign to educate people what the BNP really stand for - and to encourage people to use their vote against them. If you want to know more or get inolved please contact the above e-mail.

How do You Use Yours?

(contact uusacadmic@shu.ac.uk)

We want to know what types of feedback you get on your work and how you use your feedback to improve your learning. Come and tell us and you might just win a free laptop or one of 200 USB sticks.

Want to get involved? E-mail the above address.

Sexual Health

(contact uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk)

An estimated 1 in 10 people aged 16-24 have chlamydia, which is an asymptomatic sexually transmitted disease. If untreated the infection can lead to serious consequeces - including infertility for females. Our sexual health campaign will focus on offering free screening and advice in the HUBS and around campuss. Volunteers are needed to help with this - other than being a worthy cause, volunteering will help with your own personal development.

Students as workers

(contact uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk)

Given the current financial situation which students face over 50% are now in part time employment, its is important that students are aware of their rights. Students work overwhelmingly in the retail and hospitality industries - two of the lowest paid industries. To find out more about your basic rights visit www.worksmart.org.uk . We also aim to inform students of the benefits of trade unions - so if you wish to help out with this campaign please contact the above e-mail.

Students in the community

(contact uusequalopps@shu.ac.uk)

With students moving in and out en mass, and the high rate of moving around between years it is important for students to feel part of their community. We are developing initiatives that will link students with their local community, if you wish to be involved in the strategy, or find out more about what we’re up to please contact the above e-mail.
