The team returned from the event with 11 medals from 8 events to complete their most successful ever outdoor championships with a record number of finalists and medallists combined.

The overall team performance achieved a fantastic sixth position behind winners Loughborough University, the University of Birmingham, University of Bath, Brunel University, and Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie, respectively.

The Championships were part of the London 2012 test event series “London Prepares” between 4-7 May.

Medals

One of the performances of the event came from Sheffield Hallam’s men’s 4×400m relay squad. On the Saturday evening, in front of almost 40,000 spectators, including Lord Sebastian Coe, the squad won their heat to qualify for the final.

Evidently inspired by the experience of winning their heat, the team of Tim Burn, Rhian Hastey, Luke South and Liam Ramsey lined up against Loughborough, Brunel, Bath, and UWIC, and they surprised almost everyone by finishing comfortably in silver medal position behind Loughborough in the final event of the Championships.

In his first year at University, Joseph Dunderdale threw the Javelin 74.39m to record a new lifetime best and won Sheffield Hallam’s only gold medal of the championships. Jess Taylor had a busy weekend and in addition to her bronze medal in the long jump she also reached the semi-finals of the 200m, and was part of the 4×100m relay team who finished seventh in the final.

Second year student Tesni Ward couldn’t quite match last year’s gold medal but still came away with an excellent silver in the women’s Javelin. Karla Drew also achieved a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles finishing between the two Brunel athletes who were predicted to collect the top 2 spots.

There were also surprise ‘bonus’ medals won by both Peter Huck, bronze in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, and Moe Sasegbon in the women’s high jump.

Colan Leung, Sheffield Hallam Sports Officer, who attended the event in his capacity as BUCS Student Director and presented medals at the event said, “I am so proud of every student who has competed at the championships, but I am especially proud of our medallists who have clearly trained very hard and performed exceptionally at the event.

“The whole weekend has been another incredible spectacle for higher education sport and I’m just so pleased that Sheffield Hallam has once again been able to put itself on the map as a serious contender in student sport.”

I’ve been working with the University help put on more social sporting options for Hallam students. Me and Carl have had a go at Judo, and it seems 45 of you turned up for some boxing! We’ve got everything from badminton to gymnastics to skiing…and the best bit. It doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner…just turn up and play. Get the schedule here.

Loads of you have said that there isn’t enough space in the learning centres so I have booked out P Pod upstairs in the HUBS for you to use as study space from now until the 13th December. The space is ideal for group work and of course you can access wifi through your usual login.

RAG (Raise and Give) has officially started with students dedicating their time to raise money for the charities of Hallam Union!! The Swagger Raggers had a presence at Pounded on Monday raising £110.20 which is a third of what RAG raised overall last year!! CRAZY! To help raise awareness of it all a RAG like-a-thon is happening right now! For every person that likes SHU RAG on facebook I will donate 1p to the charities which will be decided at Union Council on Tuesday 1st November.
