If it’s your first time away from home and you have no idea where to begin packing here is a handy check list:
For the kitchen…
- 2 pans (one big one small),
- frying pan,
- Cutlery – make sure you take plenty as these are the first things to get
borrowed and go missing!
- 2 bowls, 2 plates, 2 glasses, 2 mugs
- Wooden spoon, spatula
- Sharp knife
- Sieve
- 2 tea towels
- Baking tray
- Sponge, dish cloth, washing up liquid
- And don’t forget a tin/bottle opener!
For the bedroom…
- Two pillows -this gives you one spare when you have a friend from home visit
- Duvet
- And two sets of covers/bottom sheets -otherwise you’ll have to get your set
washed, dried and back on your bed all in one day!
For the bathroom…
- Towels
- Shampoo/conditioner/shower gel
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Any beauty products you need (make up, hairdryer, straighteners etc)
Your wardrobe…
Sheffield is full of great clothes shops so you don’t need to worry about this one too much.
- Enough “going out” clothes to get you through freshers week (expect to be out
most nights!)
- A posh dress/dinner suit for the formal balls (you can hire one quite cheaply if you don’t own one)
- Plenty of day time clothes – the more you have the less often you have to wash!
- Comfy shoes, Sheffield is very hilly in places so ladies may need an alternative
to heels!
- Your school tie – essential for school disco theme nights
Health stuff…
Medication: You can register with the university doctors but its worth stocking up on a few supplies as freshers flu can be common if you are moving into halls.
- Pain killers
- Cough medicine
- Plasters
- Any prescriptions you are currently taking
Work stuff…
- Plenty of paper and pens
- Folders – if you have these early on you are more likely to get into good habits
- Computer/laptop – don’t worry if you don’t have one, the university has lots of
computers for you to use.
- Calculator
- Books – Don’t worry about buying your books until you have started at Hallam,
you will be given an essential reading list when you start lectures. Remember to
shop around online to see if you can get a good deal. Beware of buying cheaper
old editions though!
Extras…
- Music – to save space bring an MP3 player and speakers instead of your entire
CD collection
- TV – but remember to consider the TV license!
- Games console – great to get people in your room
- Alarm clock
- Washing powder
- Door stop – if you are in halls leaving your room door open helps you be more approachable and people will stop for a chat on their way past
Top tip: Remember you are limited to what you can fit in your car/on the train both going to uni AND HOME from uni. Don’t make the popular mistake of bringing extra stuff with you every time you go home or you’ll never get it back again!
