Freshers: what to expect

Freshers is a two week period put on by Hallam students union to give you a taster of all the things you can get involved with at the Union during your time at Hallam University.

If you do nothing else during freshers make sure you attend the four main Fairs:

  • The Wellfair on the 20th September, which will help you get to grips with everything to do with looking after your welfare, from how to sign up for a doctor/dentist in Sheffield to nutrition advice and information about managing your finances.
  • The Sports Fair on the 21st, where  you can find out about all the differenct sports teams you can join both recreationally and competitvely
  • The Activities Fair on the 22nd, which is where you can find out about the societies you can join as well as the volunteering projects you can get involved with
  • The Freebie Fair on the 23rd- where you basically get to come in and get bags and bags full of free stuff

The fairs can be a bit manic but don’t be intimidated. Everyone at the info stalls is there for you to speak to so ask as many questions as you like.

Don’t be afraid of turning up  to meetings and inductions on your own. Many people attend their first society/volunteering/sport meeting not knowing anybody but you will soon get to know everyone else there. Lots of students even end up living with people they have met through societies, sports or volunteering rather than people they meet through their course.
