Unfortunately, this seems like the perfect opportunity for thieves to break into houses – especially student ones.

Here is some advice to help prevent your home from being a victim of robbery.

1. The simplest but most effective way of protecting your home is just by ensuring to keep all your windows and doors locked.
2. Remove keys from out of sight of windows and front doors. Don’t make it easy for burglars to enter.
3. If you can, take all your valuables with you. If you can’t, make at least sure that they are not in front of any windows and therefore easy to see for burglars.
4. Make the impression that someone is living in your house. Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights on when it goes dark.
5. Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries.
6. Leave important documents and valuable items with other family members or a bank. Alternatively lock them in a safe.
7. Ask your trusted neighbours to check on your home regularly, e.g. collecting your post, opening and closing your curtains.
8. Make sure that no strangers hear about your holiday plans when talking about them. This also counts for social network sites where strangers can have access to.
9. If you have valuable items in your shed (bicycles etc.), consider putting them in the house.
10. Set a burglar alarm if you have one.
11. Insurances are relatively cheap, and considering the average cost of a student break in is around £900, it’s well worth spending a little extra to make sure you’re not wasting any Christmas cash on a new laptop.

There is a surplus of good quality student housing in Sheffield. Students who don’t start house hunting until the summer before they return to University still secure good properties. We recommend students wait until after the Union Housing Fair in November before even considering signing up for the next academic year.

The Advice Centre sees lots of students who sign up  very early, then change their minds a few months later. Unfortunately, once you’ve signed the tenancy agreement it cannot usually be cancelled and you may find yourself paying rent whether you move in or not!

Study skills workshops are open to all Sheffield Hallam students to help you develop the skills you need for effective university study.

In October 2012 they are offering the following workshops.

•Time management – planning your work, getting organised
•Critical thinking – get critical, enhance your academic writing
•Group work – how to be more effective working in groups
•Using feedback – interpreting and using your feedback
•Reflection – what it’s all about, reflective writing
•Communication skills – brushing up your communication skills, the art of listening and being heard

There’s no need to book – arrive in good time to make sure of a place. If a workshop is full check the schedule for the next one.
