Industrial Action – Thursday May 10th

THe UCU Union is taking Industrial Action on Thursday 10th May.

The University has made the following announcements in relation to this.

* Examinations:
There are a small number of examinations scheduled for Thursday 10 May and these will go ahead as planned.

* Assessment Hand-ins:
All assessment deadlines for Thursday 10 May still stand and assessed worked should be submitted as normal.

It is possible that your teaching might be affected by industrial action on Thursday 10 May.

Make sure you monitor your email and Blackboard, and look out for any notices, for further information about what is happening and what you should do.

Other University services (including catering, learning centres, helpdesks and administrative services) are unaffected by the strike and will be operating a normal service on Thursday 10 May.

Advice Centre – Closed for Bank Holiday

Please note that due to the Bank Holiday the Advice Centre will be closed on Monday 7th May.

We will re-open at 10am on Tuesday 8th May 2012 and will respond to any messages then.

Changes to Tenancy Deposit Scheme Regulations

The government has recently updated the rules regarding Tenancy Deposit Protection Schemes.

If you are a tenant with a tenancy that is running from 5th April 2012 onwards your landlord has until the 5th of May to protect your deposit.
If your deposit has not been protected by this date or your landlord hasn’t told you in which scheme they protected it, you can take action to get them to do it and also receive compensation.

Rental Fraud

Rental fraud

Rental fraud happens when would-be tenants are tricked into paying an upfront fee to rent a property.

In reality, the property does not exist, has already been rented out, or has been rented to multiple victims at the same time.

The victim loses the upfront fee they have paid and is not able to rent the property they thought they had secured with the payment.

Rental fraudsters often target students looking for university accommodation.

Rental fraud is a type of advance fee fraud.

Protect yourself from rental fraud:

Do not send money to anyone advertising rental properties online until you are certain the advertiser is genuine.
If you need to secure accommodation in the UK from overseas, seek the help of the employer or university you are coming to, or get a friend, contact or relative to check the property exists and is available.
Do not pay any money until you or a reliable contact has visited the property with an agent or the landlord.
Ask for copies of tenancy agreements and any safety certificates such as Gas Electricity or HMO Licence.
Do not be pressurised into transferring large sums of money. Transfer funds to a bank account having obtained the details by contacting the landlord or agent directly after the above steps have been followed. Be sceptical if you’re asked to transfer any money via a money transfer service like Western Union.

Local Elections and Mayoral Referendum- Registering to Vote

In Local Elections students can vote at their home and term time address, as long as both addresses are not in the same Local Authority area!

Remember if you’re not registered, you won’t be able to vote!

The deadline for registrations reaching Electoral Services is 18th April.

Location of polling stations

Your polling card will tell you where your polling station is. It is often a nearby school or community centre. You can also find out where your polling station is on this website www.sheffield.gov.uk/elections.

Poll cards

If you do not receive a poll card by 9 April, visit the council website to find out where your polling station is.

Postal vote application forms

If you want to vote by post the deadline for registering is fast approaching. To vote by post, you will need to fill in an application form and send it to the Electoral services to arrive by 5pm on Wednesday 18 April.

Vote by proxy

If you can’t go to the polling station and don’t wish to vote by post, you may be able to vote by proxy. This means allowing somebody to vote on your behalf. You will need to fill in an application form and send it to the Electoral Services to arrive by Wednesday 25 April.

Voting in person

Polling stations are open from 7.00am – 10.00pm on Thursday 3 May. If you have not been issued with a ballot paper by 10.00pm, you will not be able to cast your vote.

Easter Holidays – Advice Centre closed

The Advice Centre will be closed on Friday 6th April, Monday 9th April and Tuesday 10th April 2012 due to Easter holidays.

We will open on Wednesday at 10am. There will be a drop in as usual between 1pm-3pm on Wednesday.
