“Phishing” email scam
We have received reports of a fraudulent “phishing” email claiming to be from Student Finance England requesting students bank details, the email reads:
“This is a formal notification of an important account update. Due to a recent update in our database we require all student to update their account information to ensure you receive your scheduled payment, and avoid a missed payment. To update your account information, click on the link below created specially for this purpose.
Please fill the requested information exactly as you filled it when you were signing up for student finance or your payment will be suspended because of failed account verification.
Yours sincerely
Student Finance England”
If you have received an email like this requesting you update their bank details you should ignore it, under no circumstances will the Student Loans Company or Student Finance England email customers asking them to confirm bank details.
If any student has followed the link and provided their bank details they should be go online and change the password on their account as soon as possible. If they still have the email then they should forward this to security@slc.co.uk.

Extenuating Circumstances
Sometimes things happen in our lives that mean we aren’t able to perform to the best of our ability and this can have an effect on our work, it could be anything from having the flu to bereavement in the family. If you are concerned that an ‘extenuating circumstance’ i.e. an event out of your control is having a negative effect on your work it might be best to submit an extenuating circumstances form. See our leaflet Extenuating Circumstances and Academic Appeals for more information.
