RAG (Raise and Give)

Charities

Each year RAG will predominantly support four main charities nominated by Hallam students. The chosen charities are supported through RAG activities and events, although any group within the Union is welcome to fundraise.  Each of the four main charities represent one of four categories, this year’s charities are:

Local

Sheffield Domestic Abuse Outreach Service
Sheffield Domestic Abuse Outreach Service is a registered charity providing a citywide service which works with women and men from all backgrounds including black and minority ethnic groups who are experiencing any type of domestic abuse whether they are still in an abusive relationship, attempting to leave or have already left.

Regional

Safe@Last
SAFE@LAST is a registered charity working with and on behalf of young people at risk through running away. We are based at Dinnington, Nr Sheffield and were established in response to an acute need for services for the 1 in 9 children under the age of 16 in South Yorkshire who are affected.

National

British Heart Foundation
We’re the nation’s heart charity. Our vision is a world where people don’t die prematurely from heart disease. We’ll achieve this through pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease.

International

Water Aid
WaterAid is an international non governmental organisation. Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities.

The charities were nominated by Hallam students, and then chosen by Union Council from the nominations received.

The Charity Policy was recently amended which states that all charities can be supported by Hallam Union. Therefore, students can use our facilities and resources to put on events/activities to raise for any charity registered at Hallam Union. Any questions, please ask your activities officer at uusactivities@shu.ac.uk

How do I nominate a charity?

Simply download the nomination form, complete all the details and email it to d.berman@shu.ac.uk.  Or you can hand a hard copy of the form in to the Activities Pod.

If you want some inspiration, you could browse a list of charities that have contacted us looking for your support.  Click here to find out who they are.

What should I include in my nomination?

We need to know the name of the charity and the charity number. At the bottom of the form you need to fill in your name and your SHU number.  This is so we can ensure it is only Hallam students nominating charities.

The main bit of the form is for you to tell us why your charity should be chosen.  Include facts about the charity and the good work that they do, and tell us why you believe that Hallam Union should support them.  The charity must be a registered charity and have a charity number.

When are the charities chosen?

Nominations are open all year round. Nominated for the four main charities will take place around September of every year.

We then check that the charities are registered with the Charity Commission, and that they do not conflict with any Union policies or the Articles of Governance.  We remove student names and SHU numbers then pass the nominations to RAG. The chosen charities will then be listed on the RAG pages of this website.
